Long runs are part of your legacy as a distance runner.

Today we will speak about one of the great ones-Ron Hill.

Ron Hill was a British marathoner who made 3 Olympic teams (1964, 1968 and 1972). He was a textile chemist and many of his inventions make your running easier today. He develop sports tights, a mixture of running sweats and hosiery. Ron popularized carbo loading, the process where one teaches the body to take in more carbohydrates prior to a long marathon. Kenny Moore, the Sports Illustrated writer and two time Olympic marathoner, noted that Ron was “possessed by the scientific method.” In 1969, Ron Hill won the European marathon championships, in 1970, Ron won the Boston Marathon and the Commonwealth Games.

Ron ran 52 years and 28 days without missing a run. His two volume auto biography, the Long Hard Road is a must read.

Ron Hill died this morning, aged 83. He will be missed.

Sunday: Long run, 50-55 minutes, at a conversational pace

2021 RunBlogRun, week # 19, speed development, day 7

Monday: light run, 30 minutes easy pace, stretch, 2 x 150 m stride-outs, light cooldown.

Tuesday: warm-up (1 mile easy, stretch), 6 x 90 seconds, 3k pace, 2 minutes jogging in between every run, on a trail, with a 30-minute cooldown.

Wednesday: light run, 30 minutes easy pace, stretch, 2 x 150 m light cooldown.

Thursday: warm-up (1 mile easy, stretch), 8 x 45 seconds, 4 x 150m stride-outs, cooldown

Friday: light run, 30 minutes easy pace, stretch, 2 x 150 m stride-outs, light cooldown.

Saturday: warm-up (1 mile easy, stretch), 12 x 35 seconds, at 800m pace, 2-minute jogging, on trails, cooldown.

Sunday: Long run, 50-55 minutes, at a conversational pace
