One of my favorite athletes of all times is Eamon Coghlan. Eammon was a brillant miler, and a true example of persistance as well. In both 1976, and 1980, Eamonn took achingly close 4th places in both Montreal (1,500m) and Moscow (5,000m). In 1978, Eamonn Coghlan took silver in the 1,500m at the European Outdoor Championships, and in 1979, Eamonn Coghlan took gold in the European Indoor Champs 1,500m.

It was in 1983, in Helsinki, that Eamonn Coghlan won his first global title, at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. I can remember the exuberance of the gutty Irishman as he went by his Soviet competitor, with 250m to go, and put his fist in the air as he closed with that amazing miler’s speed. Eamon was a member of the 1979 World Cross Country winning team for Ireland as well as the first man over 40 to break four minutes for the mile. A class act then, and a class act today!

In the U.S., Eamon Coghlan is called “the Chairman of the Boards,” due to his prolific racing and winning on those small indoor tracks on both the East and West Coast of the US, where he put the World Indoor mile record in its own world, with an Irish miler’s name behind it. His 3:49.78, fastest time in US, indoors or out, for fourteen years! HIs seven wins in the Millrose Games’ Wanamaker Mile was only surpassed by Bernard Lagat in 2010!
