On Sunday, September 20, 2009, Tyson Gay ran 9.69, with legal winds, to set a new AR and become the equal second fastest sprinter ever, equaling the performance of Usain Bolt in Beijing in August 2008. On Wednesday, September 23, Tyson won a 100 meters at the Super Meet in Kawasaki, Japan, in 10.13. He has one more race this week, in Korea, on Friday, against Asafa Powell…Oh, Tyson Gay was named USATF Athlete of the Week for his 9.69 on Sunday!

KAWASAKI (JPN, Sep 23): US record holder Tyson Gay, who recorded 9.69 three days ago in Shanghai won the men’s 100m in the Super Meet (Area Permit) in Kawasaki during a national holiday day, but his winning time was only 10.13 (+0.5). Naoki Tsukahara finished second in 10.31, while Masashi Eriguchi was third with the same time in contest about the fastest current Japanese. Gay is to end his season on Friday in Daegu, Korea and wants to reconsider the planned surgery on his sore left groin. „About the surgery situation, I had second thoughts about getting surgery because I can run with the pain, it‘s just annoying,“ Gay said. Allyson Felix, three time world champion at 200m, won the women’s 100m with 11.22 into the headwind (-0.8). Chisato Fukushima, national record holder, was able to stay with Felix in the early part of the race but unable to keep up with her and finished second with 11.42. The biggest attraction from the Japanese point of view was Yukifumi Murakami, who won the bronze medal at the Javelin throw in Berlin World Championships. He has been at the center of attention ever since he returned from Berlin because he was the first to win a medal at Javelin throw in the World Championships. The news like Murakami threw baseball at 150Km/hour attracted nation’s attention. He achieved solid 82.41, but lost to Finnish Teemu Berlin 9th placer Teemu Wirkkala who got 82.60. “I was in the center of the attention for the first time in my life, so I was bit tense, but thanks to the cheering by fans, I was able to throw well,†said Murakami after the competition. Then Murakami continued: “I am not used to be introduced as the World Championships medalist yet, but I want to come up with big throws that will draw “Wow†from the spectators.†Russian Tatyana Lebedeva won the long jump with 660 (+0.9), another former world champion Perdita Felicien of Canada was the fastest at 100 m hurdles with good 12.74 (+0.3) ahead of heptathlete Hyleas Fountain (13.15). Jamaican record holder Dwight Thomas took over the lead in the fifth hurdle and from then on he extended his lead all the way and won in 13.37. Japanese collegiate champion Moses Yume held on to the second place and recorded 13.77 into the head wind (-1.3). Gary Kikaya of Congo won the men’s 400m (45.73) from Yuzo Kanemaru (45.91), who was closing fast in the home-straight. David Neville, an Olympic bronze medalist finished disappointing fourth with 46.34. Tiffany Williams, fifth in Berlin, won the women’s 400mH in 55.31, while Satomi Kubokura, national record holder, was second more than a second behind (56.75). Three times global champion Felix Sanchez won the men’s 400mH in 48.91. Kenji Narisako was even with Sanchez around the final bend, but Sanchez pulled away in the home-straight to win by a half second (49.41). Takafumi Suzuki won the men’s PV with 5.50m, while the national record holder Daichi Sawano failed three times at his opening height of 5.50m. US Derek Miles cleared 530 (fourth) as his poles had been broken during transport by airline. Osaka World Champion Donald Thomas won the men’s HJ (224), while Reese Hoffa won the men’s SP (20.21).

INDIANAPOLIS (USA): Dathan Ritzenhein currently in the best form of his career will lead a strong USA side at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham on October 11. Ritzenhein is returning to the roads after an impressive track season which saw him finish sixth in the World Championships 10,000 metres final in Berlin last month.
That solid display against tough African opponents saw him 1 days later post a USA 5000m record of 12 minutes 56.27 seconds at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Zurich.
Amy Begley the USA‘s reigning 10000m champion who went on to finish sixth over the distanhce in Berlin and last weekend won the national 5km crown, heads the women‘s squad.
The U.S. squad for Birmingham will also include several of the top up and coming American distance runners, giving Team USA an outstanding chance for a team medal in both the men‘s and women‘s events. The men‘s team will also include recent USA 20 km champion Brett Gotcherm the 15 km champion Andrew Carlson, Scott Bauhs and James Carney. Joining Begley will be Desiree Davila, Serena Burla, Amy Hastings and Elva Dryer.
KAMPALA (UGA): Martin Toroitich who was a member of Uganda’s bronze medal winning team at the 2004 World Half Marathon Championships in New Delhi leads his country’s assault for honours at next month’s World Half Marathon Championships in Birmingham, writes IAAF. Toroitich, the elder brother of reigning 10,000m Commonwealth champion Boniface Kiprop has participated in three previous editions (2002 / 03 / 04) of the World Half Marathon with his last appearance performance being a 13th place finish in 2004 in New Delhi, when Uganda took the team bronze medal. With Toroitich in Birmingham is Ugandan road running champion Isaac Kiprop, Moses Aliwa and Jackson Kiprop who will all be making their debuts at the World Half Marathon. The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAFhas also named Adero Nyakisi, the Ugandan champion to participate in the women’s half marathon.
PARIS (FRA): France selected full men´s team for World Half-Marathon Championships (October 11, Birmingham) with James Theuri as the leader added by David Ramard, Simon Munyutu, Fouad Larhiouch and Beonit Holzerny. The only women will be Caroline Desprez.

SHANGHAI (CHN): Despite excellent come-back with 13.15 by Liu Xiang last Sunday at Shanghai Golden Grand Prix Meeting coach Sun Haiping remains careful. Liu still needs time for full return at the best shape. His next meetings should see a better picture from him. The Chinese National Games in mid-October, Asian Championships in November and East Asian Games in December.
STOCKHOLM (SWE): Swedish federation website informs, that there will be no bid for the 2012 World Junior Championships. The reason for that decision has economical background. No financial support would be available from the city or the state. In that circumstances the organisation would not be possible. Initially Sweden wanted to celebrate the 100 years of Stockholm Olympic Stadium by staging the World Junior Championships.
PARIS (FRA): Top French names for the Francophone Games in Beyrouth in Libanon (athletics Oct 1-5) will be triple jump former European Indoor bronze winner Teresa Nzola Meso Ba, hammer throw national record holder Manuela Montebrun, steeple world finalist and national record holder Sophie Duarte (but she will compete at 1500 m). In the men team second from national championships Priso Emmanuel Ngom at 100 m (10.26), Abdeslam Kenouche at 1500 m with season best 3:37, Berlin and Osaka participant at 400 m hurdles Fadil Bellaabouss (49.17 life time best) and triple jumper Julien Kapek (17.38 PB).
MOSCOW (RUS): European 5000 m record holder Liliya Shobukhova of Russia is in preparation for her second marathon. After beeing third in London this spring in her debut (2:24:24), she will compete in Chicago on October 11. The Russian will again race with German Irina Mikitenko who won in London. Shobukhova competed at the World Championships in Berlin, but was only 19th (32:42.36) at 10 000 m.
BRIGHTON (GBR): The inaugural Brighton Marathon is now over three-quarters full with more just under two thousand of the 12,000 places already snapped up twelve weeks after entries opened. The response has been excellent and the country‘s newest full marathon race is set to become the most significant addition to the UK’s road running calendar for several years. Entries to the south coast’s most exciting event opened on 23rd June and in a matter of hours over 1,000 people from the city and further afield had already signed up.
And it’s not just home grown runners who are mad for the new marathon; the race has attracted applicants from as far as Australia, Thailand, South Africa, India, USA and Mexico, as well as many other countries across the globe. Excitement is growing in the city of Brighton & Hove, which will host its first 26.2 miler on Sunday 18th April 2010, just one week before ‘the big one’ in London. Writes David Martin. MONTE CARLO (MON): IAAF ratified the 15 km road race time of 41:29 by Deriba Merga during Ras Al Khaimah Half-Marathon this winter (February 20, 2009) which equals the existing world record of Felix Limo. The Kenyan recorded 41:29 in Nijmegen on November 11, 2001. Merga ended third in the race with 59:18.
KIYIV (UKR): Ukraine‘s Olympic Stadium will not only meet all UEFA standards for Euro 2012, but be capable of hosting world-class athletics events. Ongoing repairs to the sports complex in the capital city will, once completed, put the stadium fully in accordance with IAAF rules. A joint UEFA-IAAF commission will monitor other repairs to the Olympic Stadium complex throughout an estimated 15 months of work left until completion, ensuring the finished sports venue would be capable of handling top-level football matches, and athletics competitions. The capacity should be at 80 000 level. The latest development was also observed by IAAF Senior Vice-President Sergey Bubka.
INDIANAPOLIS (USA): Former Olympic and world 100 m winner Maurice Greene will receive the Major Taylor Award in conjunction with the 26th Annual American Family Insurance Circle City Classic in Indianapolis. Writes USATF website. Presented in honor of prominent Indianapolis cyclist Marshall „Major“ Taylor, the Major Taylor Award has been presented to African-American athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and officials annually since 1987. Recipients not only make a significant local and national contribution to youth but also encourage excellence in future generations. Greene will join such past recipients as Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Muhammad Ali and Tony Dungy.
