STORL EUROPEAN U23 RECORD
CUXHAVEN (GER, Aug 9): European U23 Champion and German
Champion David Storl improved his shot put best to 21.05 and achieved the best
result of the “Weltklasse hinterm Deich” meet (EA Classic category) in bad
weather. It is also European U23 record, it remains open whether the organisers
fulfilled all the conditions for the record ratification. Second Ralf Bartels
got 20.11. Official European U23 record is still the 20.94 by Croatian Edis
Elkasevic from 2005, although Storl already achieved this year 21.03 in Goteborg in June, but this mark was not
submitted for ratification. Zambian Gerald Phiri sprinted to 10.43 (0.0) at the
100 m.
Solid 222 in
high jump by Ukrainian Viktor Shapoval. Tactical distances wins for German
Soren Ludolph 1:49.35 (over Africans Richard Kiplagat, Abraham Chepkirwok and
miler Carsten Schlangen) and Turkish Kemal Koyuncu at 1500 m (3:46.41). Ireland´s
Fionnuala Britton won the steeple 9:51.66 and Mark Frank the javelin 78.26.
Colombian record holder Brigith Merlano got the 100 m hurdles (13.28, -0.2).
ILJUSTSENKO 196, CHUVA 834
TALLINN (EST, Aug 9): At the final meet of Estonian circuit BIGBANK
Kuldliiga at Viljandi Stadium high jumper Anna Iljustsenko cleared in first
attempt new Estonian record 196 and won so all meets of the series and won the
20 000 E jackpot. She also tried at two meters. Another top mark was registered
in men´s long jump by Marcos Chuva of Portugal who improved to 834 (+1.8) what
is sixth best mark in the world 2011 (and second in Europe) and new Portugal
U23 record (only 2 cm
shy of senior NR 836 by Carlos Calado in 1997). Second French Salim Sdiri 800
(+2.9). Jamaican Lerone Clarke won the 100 m in 10.36 (-2.3) beating Ramil Guliyev
10.44 and Marek Niit 10.73. In the 200 m Guliyev returned to beat Clarke (20.86 –
21.23, -1.0). Niit did not run the 200 m, but won the 400 m in 46.11. In women long
jump Russian Olga Balayeva was aspiring for the jackpot, but lost (658, +1.8)
to Briton Shara Proctor who leaped to windy 671 (+3.9, legal 647, +1.6). Yamila
Aldama who will represent Great
Britain in Daegu achieved 14.20 (+1.7) in
the triple jump over Belarus Natalya Vyatkina 14.17 (+2.4, 14.16 +2.0).
Ukrainian Natalya Pigida won the 400
m (51.99) and home Tiindrek Nurme clocked 3:59.74 over
the mile. French Samuel Coco-Viloin clocked 13.79 (-1.5) at 110 m hurdles. Home star Gerd
Kanter won the discus (65.46) and Risto Matas improved in javelin to 81.56
ahead of Marko Janes (80.33 PB) and Mihkel Kokk (80.07). In men´s high jump
European junior champion Nikita Anishchenkov cleared 226 to beat reigning world
champion Yaroslav Rybakov (220).
DRIOUCH WYB AT 1000 M
SOLLENTUNA (SWE, Aug 9): At a local meet new world youth best at 1000 m by Qatari talent
Hamza Driouch (will be 17 in
November) who clocked 2:17.44. He is Daegu bound for 1500 m. The former mark of
Japhet Kimutai from Kenya
was 2:17.59 in 1995.
TURKISH NATIONAL RECORDS
ANKARA (TUR, Aug 9): At national federation Trials in
Ankara Mehmet Guzel clocked new national senior and junior record at 400 m 46.18. Even more
impressive men´s national team 4×400 m with new national record 3:03.92 and
Daegu qualification. The composition was Ali Kayas, Halit Kilic, Yavuz Can and
Serdar Tamac.
FOREMAN 192 IN HIGH JUMP
NEURIM (ISR, Aug 9): Ma´ayan Foreman equaled the Isreali high jump
record here with 192 first attempt clearance. The record holder (192 in last year) Danielle
Frenkel was second with 185
cm.. It should be noted that Frenkel jumped 194 this
indoor.
WOMEN HAMMER AT MAIN STADIUM
BERLIN (GER): The ISTAF meet of Berlin (September 11) will for first held a
women hammer throw in the main stadium and during the main day of the
competition. That is for first time in the 90 years of the meet. ISTAF will
have in the programme also women javelin and men discus so three long throws
during one afternoon. It is expected that Betty Heidler will be the star of the
hammer. The organizers also informed they will prepare a private jet to bring
top athletes from Italy,
from Rieti meet which will be staged the day before.
NO STANDARDS FROM LANDAU
LANDAU (GER): The standards from special pole vault meet in Landau, Germany
last weekend will not count. The conditions at the square did not fulfill the
standards set by IAAF. That means the 580 of German Bjorn Otto and also the 560
by Italian Giuseppe Gibilisco are not counting as Daegu standards.
UK DAEGU TEAM
LONDON (GBR): UKA announced defending World champions
Jessica Ennis and Phillips Idowu in a 67-strong squad as part of the Aviva Great
Britain & Northern Ireland team for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in
Daegu. Strongly tipped medal hopes Mo Farah and Dai Greene will also board the
plane to Asia along with 2009 Berlin
silver and bronze medallists Lisa Dobriskey 1500m and Jenny Meadows 800m.
Looking to follow on from their success at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona, Commonwealth
champion Andy Turner, Christian Malcolm and Chris Tomlinson have been selected
in the 110m hurdles, 200m and long jump respectively. The inclusion of sprinter
Marlon Devonish marks a record eighth appearance for the Aviva GB & NI team
at a World Championship. The team will be captained by European silver
medallist Christian Malcolm, who made his first appearance in a British vest 15
years ago. The team will now prepare for the World Championships at the Aviva
holding camp in Ulsan, South Korea, in the week leading up

NEW FISU PRESIDENT: GALLIEN OF FRANCE
SHENZHEN (CHN): FISU First
Vice-president Claude-Louis Gallien (FRA) will lead the international university sports federation,
FISU for the next four years. The former French university Hammer Throwing
champion won the election against incumbent George Killian with 76 votes to 67.
This followed the last minute withdrawal of two candidates – Finland’s Risto Nieminen and Sweden’s Stefan
Bergh. Just shy of his 69th birthday, Mr
Gallien holds a PhD in Biology and a State Doctorate in Natural Sciences. A
Vice-president of the French National Olympic Committee, Mr Gallien is
well-known for his involvement in anti-doping. He was President of the French
National Commission for Fighting Against Doping (1996-1999) and is currently a
member of the French Council for Prevention and Fighting Against Doping
(1999-present) and a member of the scientific group in the Medical Commission
of the IOC (2003-present). Russian Oleg Matytsin was elected First-vice
president with 96 votes to 67 against Serbian Sinisa Jasnic. Informs AIPS

RESULTS
IRKUTSK (RUS, Aug 4-5): At Memorial meet in Siberia solid women distances. Olesya Syreva clocked
8:49.99 in the 3000 m
over Yelena Zadorozhnaya 8:51.43. She was also second in the 1500 m (4:09.04) won by Anna
Konovalova 4:08.10 (she won the 800
m in 2:03.59). Valentina Karnaukhova scored a 200/400 m
double (23.38 and 53.02). In men events Aleksey Pogorelov won the 400 m hurdles in 49.96 and
Ivan Yushkov achieved 20.00
m in shot put.
