(KOR): World 100 m leader Asafa Powell of Jamaica decided because of
his situation with groin injury not to run the 4×100 m relay. “It´s not
good idea to risk it with my team and country depending on me. Im still a
little sore. Im training well but there is still a slight pain,” said
Powell.

world leading 2:58.82 in the 4×400 m relay (Berry 43.7 split), still
saving McQuay and Taylor, possibly B. Jackson. David Storl again
improved his European U23 shot put record to 21.50 m. Dutch Dafne
Schippers bettered the national senior record to 22.69 in the 200 m
heats (-0.3) and is now 6th best ever junior in Europe and all results
ahead of her coming from 1980-1991, also 6th best European senior result
of 2011. 

SURPRISE OF THE SESSION
Olympic
winner 2008 Irving Saladino out from long jump, 784 cm. On the other
hand positive surprise from long jump world champion Dwight Phillips
without competing since June 25 and having only 3 competitions during
the whole year was the best with excellent 832 cm.

holder Rebryk, US Patterson and Spanish Chilla the major names out from
javelin qualification. Russian Sidorov and Belarus Lyzhyn top two names
out from shot put qualification. Long list of good names out from long
jump prelim: Goodwin, Tsatoumas, Rutherford (injury), Mokoena, Gaisah,
Lapierre, Sdiri, Quinley. In women HJ out European U23 champion Petre,
Spanish record holder Beitia. In 800 m heats out Dutch Euro medalist
Hak, 1:58 this year S. Usovich of Belarus and after cramp Ukrainian
Petlyuk. Fastest time by Jepkosgei 1:59.36 (not very good for public to
use uknown second names of Kenyan athletes – Busienei and also Cheiywa
for Chemos in the steeple). 5000 m failures by Australians Birmingham,
St. Lawrence and Mottram, European indoor champion Rui Silva. Should be
noted that the 800 m and 5000 m heats were staged in very hot (close to
35 degrees) and humid (close to 80 percent) conditions. US Jeneba Tarmoh
out in 200 m heats (23.60).

JT: 68.76 by Obergfoll is the 2nd longest Javelin throw in the qualifying round of WC.

WATT: “That first jump really threw
me off, it’s not as though I just fouled I was way out and I almost hit
it [the board] with my other foot. It was a tailwind for the guys before
me and I ended up -1.6 I think, which messed with my run-up. The wind
was dead on the second round so it was fine. I will probably be more
nervous today than I will tomorrow because qualifying is always tricky.
So it’s all a bit weird out there today, there were some big names who
didn’t get through. But I hit my second one so it’s fine,” world leader

Channel 4 have dropped Ortis Deley as the main presenter of their
coverage of the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu after his
inept performance drew a barrage of complaints from viewers.  Deley is
best known as a presenter for the Channel 5 programme The Gadget Show
but has struggled hugely to adapt to the live presenting role, and has
made a series of significant errors in South Korea at the biggest
athletics event in the world outside the Olympic Games. He has also been
accused of a lack of knowledge about the sport and before the
competition reached the halfway stage, he has been replaced by That
Paralympic Show presenter Rick Edwards. Informs insidethegames.

TV: World and olympic winner Maurice
Greene is enjoying his TV work on behalf of European sports channel
Eurosport, doing post events interviews and analysis.

BEKELE: Kenenisa Bekele, did not
compete in the 5000 m heats. He travelled back to Ethiopia and is back
in training with his focus on next years Olympic Games in London. 
“Obviously, after my 10.000m it is a little bit to soon to run the
5000m. I am back in Addis now and already did a good training session.
My injury is healed completely, but I was having small problems in the
lead up to the championships and that caused a delay in my preparations.
I was only able to do three track sessions before I started in Daegu
and that is of course not enough. Maybe people wonder why I was in Daegu
at the World Championships, but I felt it was important to represent my
country. Besides that I have been out for a long time because of my
injury and it was great to be in the athletes village, to be among my
athletics friends and to be in a full stadium again. This was the best
motivation for me to go back now and start my preparation for London
2012. It was not nice to lose, since I have never lost a 10.000m in my
career, but sunday was my start in my preparation for London 2012,” said
Bekele via a press release from his management company Global Sports.
He is scheduled to compete at Van Damme Memorial on September 16 in
Brussels.

GABORONE: Big celebrations were
staged for 400 m gold medalist Amantle Montsho. Observers are saying it
was like Botswana would be the winner of soccer World Cup. Her post
Daegu scheduled is not yet finalised.

EUROPE:
Four European teams in men´s 4×400 m final, that is half of the start
list (GBR, GER, RUS, BEL). Europe had 4 teams also in all past World
Champs since 2001. Bahamas saved top two people (Ch. Brown and Pinder)
and did not qualify. 

JAMAICA: Grace Jackson, team leader
of the Jamaican delegation here in Daegu at the IAAF World Championships
in Athletics, has registered her disappointment with the food offering
inside the Athletes’ Village and has called for the provision of a chef
for teams travelling at major championships in the future. Jackson
shared that the entire Jamaican delegation, including the athletes, are
far from impressed with the options here, and relayed the difficulties
faced with the high concentration of Asian food being presented to the
athletes. Writes The Gleaner. National 400m record holder Jermaine
Gonzales complained about the food after his fourth-place finish in the
final on Tuesday, but he isn’t the only one having difficulties.

DAEGU (KOR): Asiancorrespondent.com
writes that two foreign athletes from Africa who are participating in
the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu are being investigated
by police after it was learned they had sexually molested two female
Korean college students. According to the Eastern Daegu Police Station
on August 30, at approximately 8pm on August 25 the two foreign athletes
greeted the two female Korean college students, who were working
part-time jobs in the athlete village in eastern Daegu, and then grossly
felt their bodies. The foreigners told the female students they would
greet them in the fashion of their country, and then touched their
bodies, and continued to do so as they ran away for some 20 to 30
meters. Feeling sexually humiliated, the female students made a report
two days later and the foreigners are under investigation by police.
