ADIDAS KICKS OFF SECOND ANNUAL GOLDEN STRIPES
TRACK AND FIELD SERIES

High School Runners Earn a Chance to Check Their Speed against Elite Runners at the adidas Grand Prix

PORTLAND, Ore. (March 23, 2012) – On Saturday (March 25),  adidas running will spring forward with its second annual Golden Stripes Series. The series brings together high school track athletes, cross country runners and multisport athletes from across the nation to compete for an invitation to the adidas Grand Prix in New York on June 9.

The 2012 Golden Stripes Series officially commenced today at the adidas Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., and will be followed by two additional qualifying meets including Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. beginning on April 21 and the Golden South Classic in Orlando, Fla. beginning May 26.

“Last year 45 amazing high school athletes earned the chance to compete in the adidas Grand Prix against the top track and field stars in the world through the Golden Stripes Series,” said Mikal Peveto, director of running, adidas America. “We’re looking forward to more great competition this year and hope to witness national record-breaking performances.”

The field for the Dream Mile consists of three regional qualifiers and nine at large bids to be selected by adidas based on season pr’s, performance at high level meets and quality of wins.

The goal is to break four minutes in the boy’s race and eclipse the national record of 4:35.1 on the girl’s side. The field for the 100M will consist of three regional qualifiers and six at large bids to be selected by adidas and will be based on the same criteria as the Dream Mile. The ultimate goal of the 100M race is to produce the fastest US time for the season.

Winners will earn a chance to race alongside some of the world’s greatest track and field stars in the adidas Grand Prix, including previously announced 100M World Champion Yohan Blake.

In addition, mile and 100M winners will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to receive coaching from former mile world record holder and track and field legend, Jim Ryun, and the current indoor 60m world record holder Mo Greene.

Flotrack will share series highlights including race previews, recaps and athlete profiles at www.adidasgoldenstripes.com.

The feature stories will focus on three top contenders and their quest to break national records: Marvin Bracy to break :10 in the 100M; Edward Chesereck’s to break 4:00 in the mile; and Cami Chapus’ to break the girl’s national record in the mile.
