Galen Rupp to Race 2022 New York City Marathon (with interview from RBR Archives)

Recently, Galen Rupp announced that he would be running the 2022 New York City Marathon on 6 November 2022. Galen Rupp has had a rough couple of years. After his win on February 29, 2022, at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Galen, like all of us, had to accept that the Tokyo Olympics would be postponed a year. When he finally ran that race, he looked great until about 37k, when Eliud Kipchoge, in the sweltering heat of Sapporo, Japan, just broke the field. Galen Rupp, long considered a medal favorite, finished 8th.

Galen then ran the 2022 World Championships Marathon in Eugene, Oregon. During that race, Galen Rupp had to stop due to back spasms and finished 17th in 2:09.34.

We wish him a good block of training and recovery. If Galen Rupp can get into shape and manage his training block, he could do quite well at the NYC Marathon.

Galen Rupp has two Olympic medals, London 2012, silver at the 10,000m, and Rio 2016, bronze in the marathon. His five appearances on the track and one at the marathon at the World Champs (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and now, 2022) illustrate a man at the pinnacle of our sport.

What wonders is how much longer Galen Rupp will pursue his athletics dreams. A growing family and the challenges of training at a world-class level are challenging in themselves. It was clear to me in this interview that Galen loves to be with his wife and family, and it pains him to be away.

Galen Rupp is the #Socialingthedistance guest this week.

Galen Rupp was quite a good athlete at Central Catholic in Portland, Oregon. I saw him win the

Nike Border Clash. The first time I saw Galen race was when he was a junior and running the

AAU Junior 5000m, where he took second. David Frank, the Central Catholic coach, had called

me at home and said I needed to meet him at SJCC to see this guy who is “the real thing.”

I like Galen Rupp but did not interview him until the Nike Border Clash that next Fall.

I have seen Galen Rupp in his Olympic events (2008, 2012, 2016) and WC (2007, 2009, 2011,

2013, 2015).

My thoughts: Galen Rupp is one of the finest American and global distance runners in modern

athletics. His ability to battle at 1 mile to 10,000m in the past and the marathon now should not

be underrated.

Galen Rupp has a well-developed sense of humor and is a student o the sport. The guy is at his best

when he is in battle at the ends of races.
