This is Monday, August 15, 2022. It is day one of Week Seven in the 2022 RunBlogRun Summer Cross Country Mileage Program.
Even Olympic champions have battles to overcome. In 1977-1979, just after John Walker had taken gold in the Montreal Olympics 1,500 meters, Sir John developed compartment syndrome. The muscles in the front of his legs would enlarge painfully in exercise, and he had to limit his workouts to 30 minutes of running at a time. John had to get surgery for this, which relieved the swelling issues but had some issues of their own.
John Walker ran over 120 sub-four-minute miles in his career, broke the world record at the mile, and broke the record for the 1,500m, but was second in that race (Commonwealth Games 1974), and he had one of the most storied careers in our sport.
