This is an EME News recap of the final Diamond League meeting in 2022, the Zurich Weltklasse, held on Sept 7-8, 2022 at the Stadium Letzigrund in Zurich, Switzerland. The meeting dates back to August 1928, a was originally known as the Nurmi Meeting.
Lyles smashes Bolt’s record in the 200 m
ZURICH (SUI, Sep 8): Wanda Diamond League final offered as part of Weltklasse Zurich great clashes and interesting dramas before the sold-out stadium. In total 4 meet records (and Kovacs on Wednesday) and 3 World leads (also plus Kovacs in shot) were the statistical summary. From Eugene winners, 14 could be on top also on Thursday at Letzigrund. Winners also secured Wild Cards for Budapest 2023.
Men
100m – Comfortable win for Trayvon Bromell in 9.94 ahead of Yohan Blake (10.05) and Aaron Brown (10.06).
200m – One of the performances of the night. Noah Lyles powered to victory in 19.52 to smash Usain Bolt’s meeting record of 19.66. He won by exactly half a second from Aaron Brown (20.02) and Alexander Ogando (20.02). And that was in already colder conditions at the end of the meet.
400m – Kirani James closes his season with a 44.26 clocking ahead of Bryce Deadman (44.47) and Vernon Norwood (44.66)
800m – With a late charge, Emmanuel Korir runs down Marco Arop for victory in a world lead of 1:43.26 to 1:43.38. Jake Wightman was third in 1:44.10.
1500m – Back-to-back sub-3:30 clockings for Jakob Ingebrigtsen who improved his world lead to 3:29.02 to defeat Timothy Cheruiyot (3:30.27).
3000m steeplechase – Another comfortable win for Soufiane El Bakkali in 8:07.67
110m hurdles – Grant Holloway got the better of Rasheed Broadbell, 13.02 to 13.06.
400m hurdles – Alison dos Santos extends his unbeaten streak in 2022 with victory in 46.98, his fourth sub-47 second time, ahead of Khalifah Rosser in 47.76.
Long jump – Having already won the competition with 8.33m, Miltiadis Tentoglou improved to 8.42m in the last round.
Triple jump – Andy Diaz jumped a lifetime best of 17.70m in the first round to upset Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo (17.63m) and Jordan Diaz (17.60m).
Pole vault – Armand Duplantis closed his season by improving his meeting record by one centimeter to 6.07m. Sondre Guttormsen was second with 5.86m to equal the Norwegian record.
Javelin – Neeraj Chopra won with his second-round throw of 88.44m ahead of Jakub Vadlejch (86.94m) ad Julian Weber (83.73m).
Discus – Kristjan Ceh improved to 67.10m in the last round to win by more than a metre from Lukas Weisshaidinger with 65.70m.
Women
100m – A seventh sub-10.7 clocking for Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2022! 10.65 (equaled meet record) for victory ahead of Shericka Jackson (10.81) and Marie-Josee Ta Lou (10.91).
200m – After finishing second in the 100m, Shericka Jackson streaked to victory in the 200m in 21.80 to win by a huge margin from Gabrielle Thomas (22.38) and Tamara Clark (22.42).
400m – Marileidy Paulino broke the 49 second-barrier for the first time with 48.99 WL and NR and led a one-two for the Dominican Republic with Fiordazila Cofil second in 49.93.
800m – Victory for Mary Moraa in 1:57.63 from Natoya Goule in 1:57.85. Keely Hodgkinson was a tired fifth in 1:59.06.
1500m – Faith Kipyegon produced a 57.75 last lap to win in 4:00.44 by more than one second from Ireland’s Ciara Mageean (4:01.68) and Freweyni Hailu (4:01.73).
3000m steeplechase – Werkwuha Getachew won in 9:03.57 from Winfred Yavi in 9:04.47.
100m hurdles – Another win for Tobi Amusan in a meeting record of 12.29. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn had to settle for fourth in 12.49.
400m hurdles – Femke Bol was challenged by Dalilah Muhammad in the first 300 meters but prevailed once again in 53.03 to Gianna Woodruff’s 53.72. Muhammad faded to fourth in 53.83.
High jump – After 2.05m in Brussels, Yaroslava Mahuchikh cleared 2.03m in Zurich to win by nine centimeters from teammate Iryna Gerashchenko.
Long jump – Ivana Vuleta adds the Diamond League title to her world indoor and European titles with her first-round jump of 6.97m. Malaika Mihambo was fourth with 6.52m but had a narrow foul in the last round which looked in the seven-meter-region.
Triple jump – Yulimar Rojas produced the best two jumps of the competition – 15.28m and 14.99m – ahead of Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk who produced her second best ever mark with 14.96m.
Discus – Another close battle between Valarie Allman and Sandra Perkovic with the American winning with 67.77m to Perkovic’s 67.31m. Next clash is on Sunday in Zagreb.
Javelin – Another win for Kara Winger (her last meet) over world champion Kelsey-Lee Barber, 64.98m to 63.72m.
