We have received an update on Super shoes from Maggie Durand at World Athletics:
The Nike Dev 163 worn by Mr. Kiptum is on our Approved Shoe List as a Development Shoe, to be worn from 04/12/2022 to 03/12/2023..
Development Shoes are not required to be made Available for Purchase (Regulation 8.3.1).
It is up to the manufacturers to decide whether (and if so when) to produce a Development Shoe’s final version and bring it to the market as a New Shoe. But if they do, it again requires an approval from us (Point 5.2 of Appendix 2 to the Athletic Shoe Regulations)
According to several press articles (see e.g. this article), it seems that Nike plans to release the current Development Shoe (Nike Dev 163) as a New Shoe under the name “Alphafly 3” in early 2024.
As of yet, World Athletics has not yet received any application from Nike for a New Shoe called “Alphafly 3”. However, they actually still have time to apply for it if they want this shoe to be on the Approved Shoe List in 2024.
There is no Regulation in place prohibiting a manufacturer from advertising an upcoming release even before they have applied for an approval – their marketing activities are independent from our approval process (the only requirement is that a New Shoe must be Available for Purchase no later than one month prior to the first competition where this New Shoe is then worn (Regulation 13.2))
