Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed in an auto accident on February 11, 2024, at 11 PM Local Kenyan time.
Kelvin Kiptum, in only three marathons (2:01.53, Valencia, 2:01.22, London, 2:00.35 Chicago), Kelvin shook up the marathon world.
I was looking forward to a battle in Paris between Kelvin Kiptum, Eliud Kipchoge, and Tamirat Tola, but no more.

The sad thing is that Kelvin Kiptum, like Sammy Wanjiru, will always be 24.
Kenya is rough and dangerous. One of my notes from someone who has traveled to Kenya notes, “Highways are dark, no lights, you really can not stop on these roads as you will be robbed or worse.”
The sad thing is that the unfortunate news for Kenya continues, from AIU announcements to such tragedies as the deaths of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.
When I heard the announcement, I was taken back to the death of Sammy Wanjiru and the news report on Steve Prefontaine all those years ago.
Sad, terrible news.
