The Weltklasse, held in Zurich today, gave us much to admire about our sport-records and competition combined to give the SRO crowd a night of world class track & field. Here are my highlights:

The crowd at the Zurich Weltklasse was entertained by one of the best nights that one could imagine in track & field! Usain Bolt, the spirit who moves our sport, runs 9.81, with Asafa Powell in 9.88, and Darvis Patton running 9.95 and Mike Rodgers running 9.98!
LaShawn Merritt and Jeremy Wariner, in a battle of the 400 titans, dueled between themselves, 44.21 to 44.61, as Renny Quow of Trinidad ran third in 44.77 and David Gillick ran a strong 45.25. Angelo Taylor, 2001 and 2008 Olympic 400m hurdle champ, was fifth in 45.28 and Kerron Clement, the 2009 400m Hurdle champ was seventh in a tired 45.46.
Eight men under 1:45, with David Rudisha of Kenya getting the win in 1:43.52. Gary Reed in fifth in 1:44.26, Yuriy Borzakovskiy in sixth in 1:44.40 and Nick Symmonds running a gutty 1:44.86.
Augustine Choge, trying to erase the memory of a lackluster WC final, ran a brilliant
3:33.28 for the win here over Bela Ali of Bahrain and Asbel Kiprop. Lopez Lomong of US was seventh in 3:36.94 ( oh, you must read the superb article in Austin Runner on Lopez Lomong by Bob Wischnia! ).
In a monumental 5,000 meter race, Kenenisa Bekele ran 12:52.32, the fastest time in the world, holding off Edwin Cheruiyot Soi, who ran 12:55.03. The big surprise was was the hard charging Dathan Ritzenhein, who broke the thirteen year old record of Bob Kennedy (12:58.21, set in Zurich as well), with his superb 12:56.27! Ritz was seventh with two laps to go!
In the steeplechase, Ezekiel Kemboi and Bouabdellah Tahri duked it out over 3,000 meters, seven water jumps and twenty one barriers, with Kemboi winning, 8:04.44 to 8:05.29. Note Jukka Keskisalo of Finland in 8:10.67 in sixth place!
In the 110m hurdles, Dwight Thomas of Jamaica won in 13:16, with Terrance Trammell in 13.17, Ryan Brathwaite in 13.27 and David Payne in 13.32. David
Oliver was fifth in 13.33.
Andreas Thorkildsen hurled the javelin 91.28 meters, which is getting pretty serious kids!
In the 4 x 100 meters, all was on Jamaica and the recenty dqed US team, and Wallace Spearmon had a lead as Usain Bolt anchored. Jamaica won 37.70 to 37.73!
Carmelitat Jeter got some revenge, with her 10.86 over Kerron Stewart and Shelly Ann Fraser ( fourth). Sanya Richards, running relaxed, just burned up the track with her blazing 48.94! Allyson Felix, in a rare foray into the 400 meters, ran 49.83 for second!
Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britian ran 40.41 for fourth.
What is this? Three American women under 4:01.01? Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain, the World Champion, ran 3:59.15, with Anna Willard in second, in 3:59.38, Lisa Dobriskey of GBR in third in 3:59.50 and Shannon Rowburty in 4:00.81, with Christin Wurth Thomas in 4:01.01!
Brigitte Foster Hylton of Jamaica won the 100m hurdles in 12.46 with Dawn Harper in second in 12.48, and Perdita Felician, the 2001 champ, in 12.61. Lo Lo Jones ran 13.06, in her first race back. Give her two weeks.
Blanka Vlasic is back in the place she likes; first. Winning the high jump i 2.01m, Anna Chicherova was second in 1.98, Chante Lowe of US was third in 1.98 and Ariane Friedrich of German in fourth in 1.94m.
And what a difference a week makes. Yelena Isinbayeva sets a new world record of 5.06m, or 16-71/4, one week after her no height in Berlin! That, is a champion! Coming back from the worst nightmare, Isinbeyeva should be congratulated for such a brilliant jump! ———————————————————————————————
