SAN GIORGIO (ITA, Jan 6): Ethiopian 2008 world junior champion and olympic fifth placer Abreham Cherkos won the first important European Cross Country race of the year in Italy. At 53rd Campaccio in San Giorgio su Legnano (EA CC Permit) he covered the 10 km in 28:52 just one second ahead of Kenyan title defender and former track world champion Eliud Kipchoge (28:53). Third Berlin 10 000 m medalist Moses Masai in 28:56 and fourth Titus Mbishei also of Kenya completed the top group in 28:57. Fifth place for best European in the race Ukrainian terrain specialist Sergiy Lebid in 29:30 and best Italian Andrea Lalli as 7th clocked 29:50. Hungarian Aniko Kalovics defended her last year title in women´s 6 km after 20:17 with clear margin of 8 seconds over best Italian Elena Romagnolo (20:25) and next Italian Federica Dal Ri (20:27). Women top three were the same as in 2009. Fourth British talent and world junior champion Stephanie Twell in 20:37.
