The Team USA Minnesota is an example of how the club system can work for its members and for the sport. With a strong coach, and the support of the local community, runners like Jason Lemkuhle, Matt Gabrielson and Andrew Carlson get chances to train and develop into elite class athletes. Here is a quick update on several of the teams’ recent and upcoming races:

Minneapolis/St. Paul – April 11, 2011 – Team USA Minnesota’s Jason
Lehmkuhle
will be among a deep field of international competitors at
the 2011 Virgin London Marathon on Sunday, April 17.  The elite men’s race
starts at 9:45 a.m. (elite women at 9:00 a.m.) followed by some 50,000
runners.

Lehmkuhle is seeking a fast time on the flat course that goes by London
landmarks and ends at Buckingham Palace.  He has a best in the marathon of
2:12:24 which he set at Boston in 2010 when he finished ninth overall.  “I
wanted to get on a course that gave me the best chance to run in the 2:10 to
2:11 range and something that would more closely simulate the flatish course
that the 2012 U.S. Trials will be run on,” Lehmkuhle told Down the Backstretch
earlier this month.

So far this year, he has finished fifth at the USA Half Marathon
Championships in January with a time of 1:02:49, was first in the Ohme 30 km
Road Race in Japan in February with a time of 1:32:08, and was 16th at the NYC
Half Marathon in March with a time of 1:02:58.

Lehmkuhle has run marathons at Twin Cities, Chicago, New York and Boston
and was a rabbit for a 2:11 pace group at the London Marathon in 2008.  He
finished fifth in the 2007 U.S. Olympic Men’s Marathon Trials and ninth in the
2004 Marathon Trials.  He plans to compete in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Men’s
Marathon Trials, which will be held next January in Houston.

Great Ireland Run 10k Results
Andrew Carlson was fifth in 30:00 and Matt
Gabrielson
finished sixth in 30:08 (winning time was 29:26) at the SPAR
Great Ireland Run 10k in Dublin on April 10.  Carlson was a last minute
addition to the field and was able to join Gabrielson at the starting line on
Sunday.  Almost 8,000 runners finished the race which is known as the
country’s premier 10k run and is the site of the Irish 10k National
Championships.
