Dix_Walter-Doha11.jpgWalter Dix, 2011 Doha DL, photo by PhotoRun.net

Walter Dix is healthy and full of running! Running a fine 20.06 opener in Doha, Dix took on a modest early season field, and ran his own race. Running well, Dix showed that he has overcome his injuries late in the 2010 season, and is ready to run well in 2011.

Mohr_Malte-Doha11.jpgMalte Mohr, Doha pole vault champion, photo by PhotoRun.net

Sergey Bubka, the world record holder (6.14m, 31 July 1994),  and six time World Champion, must have gotten a chuckle in this one. Better than anyone, Mr. Bubka knows how the typical vaulter has some highs and lows in the vaulting world. Renaud Lavillenie, the 2011 Euro Champ and highest jumper of 2011 (6.03m) took a modest fourth place here, jumping 5.60 meters.

Malte Mohr won here, and took out the meet record of one Sergey Bubka, who cleared 5.80m here way back in 1998. (Note that, the following Sunday, Renaud Lavillenie competed in  the 100 meters and long jump at a meet in southern France, running 11.20 and jumping 6.74m).

Tamgho_Teddy-Doha11.jpgTeddy Tamgho winning in Doha, photo by PhotoRun.net

Teddy Tamgho won the triple jump here in 17.49 meters. Winning by nearly a half meter, over Leevan Sands of the Bahamas, in 17.09m and Alexis Copello of Cuba ( a dangerous jumper, when he gets it together), in 17.05m, and Yoann Rapinier of France, who took fourth, jumping a very modest 16.21m.

Alas, it is early season. I had a dream though. A triple jump epic battle in Daegu, with Tamgho and Idowu, which could see some crazy long jumps!

Armstrong_DylanR-Doha11.jpgDylan Armstrong, Doha shot winner, photo by PhotoRun.net

Dylan Armstrong is a nice guy. And, on top of that, he is from Canada. The guy can throw the shot pretty darn far, and today, 21.38 meters was the throw needed to put Reese Hoffa in second in 21.27, Ryan Whiting in 21.23m for third, Maris Urtans of Latvia in fourth in 20.82m. In fifth, a recovering Christian Cantwell threw 20.79m and Tomasz Majewski of Poland, who took sixth, threw 20.68m. Not every day one beats Olympic and World Champions, so Dylan Armstrong, 2010 Commonwealth Champ, Nice job!

Kanter_Gerd-Doha11.jpgGerd Kanter, Doha DL discus winner, photo by PhotoRun.net

Gerd Kanter of Estonia and Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania are the Baltic gods of the discus. Face it, without these two gargantuans, the discus is a ho-hum affair. Kanter can throw 67 meters in his sleep (67.49m to win here), and Alekna could toss a tree over 60 meters. Alekna, a man of some stature, threw the discus 65.92 meters for second. Piotr Malachowski, the Euro Champ, was back in fifth, with Jason Young of the US in seventh and Jarred Rome in ninth.

So, take a young man with good throwing technique, team him up with the current world record holder (98.48m, 25 May 1996) Jan Zelezny, and you might have a winning combination. Consider, dear readers, the case of one Petr Frydrych. The young Czech dropped a 85.32 meter throw and won the opening DL! Johan Oosthuizen of South Africa was closest, throwing 84.38m. Tero Pitkamaki of Finland was third, hitting 83.91m. Sergey Makarov of Russia was fourth, throwing 83.78m. And Andreas Thorkildsen, the 2010 numero uno in the spear, a man who can chew tobacco or gum better than most ML baseball pitchers, was caught in a) early season , b) watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air, as he took fifth, throwing 8
3.63 meters.

Cheiywa_Milcah-Doha11.jpgMilcah Chemos Cheywa, Doha DL steeple winner, photo by Photorun.net

The steeplechase will be a very tough race in Daegu this coming August. Take the first race globally, in Doha, where Milcah  Cheywa wins in 9:16.44, with Mercy Njoroge in 9:16.94 and Lydia Jebet Rotich in third in 9:19.20.

My guess? It will take 9 minutes to medal in 2011. The battle between Kenya and Russia could be intense here. Wonder if any of our American woman (Simpson, Pierce, Hall, Coburn), will focus on it?
