Points: USA 139, ETH 58, RUS 56, GBR 55, KEN 54, GER 48, CHN 42 (56 countries, + 7)

STATS:

100mH semi: 12.39 by Pearson was the fastest semi at the OG ever.

LJ women: 640 made the final. It would not have made the final in any Olympics after 1984.

800m semi: 1:44.93 was the slowest to make the final. That would have made the final in every Olympic 800 semi except in 2000 when 1:44.85 was required to make the final

200m semi: 22.56 is the slowest time to qualify. It would have made the final in every Olympics except for 1988 when 22.55 was required.

DT: Ehsan Hadadi is the first Asian to win an Olympic medal in discus (and first athletics medal for his country at the Olympics). Best marks for place for 4th and 5th at the Olympics were set.

HJ: 238 is the second highest winning height in the Olympic just behind 239 by Austin in 1996. The winning margin of 5cm is the max since 1980 when Wessig also won by 5cm Ukhov became 4th HJumper to win both World Indoor and Olympics

100mH: 12.37 by Harper is the fastest losing time in Olympics. Best marks for place in the Olympics at 100mH were set for place 1-5. 12.37 is the fastest losing time (not just in Olympics) but all time.

1500m: First US medal at Olympics since Jim Ryun won silver in 1968.

OTHER NEWS

HARTING: Discus winner Robert Harting had in the night when he celebrated his gold his accreditation and belongings stolen. Fortunately for him the ceremony is next day, so gold medal will still be in his hands. Harting did not return to olympic village in the night but was sleeping one hour at the metro station. He could be back only at 8 am. German media are informing.

ETHIOPIA: One of Ethiopia’s medal hopefuls in the women’s 800m, Fantu Megiso has been ruled out of the ongoing games due to injury. Also no shows in women 800 m heats Liliya Lobanova of Ukraine and Kenia Sinclair of Jamaica.

MOLDOVA: Before the Games positive tests were revealed for Moldova´s throwers. Natalya Artic has 61.82 in discus from this year and Marina Marghieva from hammer sisters has 72.53 from 2009.

EUROPEAN U23 RECORDS: Gesa-Felicitas Krause GER in women 3000 steeple 9:23.52 (former mark 9:24.78 Lyubov Ivanova RUS 2003) and Polat Arikan Kemboi TUR in men 10 000 m 27:38.81 (former mark his own from Bilbao this year 27:56.28).

MAJEWSKI: The olympic shot put winner Tomasz Majewski will have heavy schedule after Olympic Games. He is confirmed for Stockholm DN Galan on August 17, then Kamila Skolimowska Memorial on Aug 19 in Warszawa, throwing meet in Thum, Germany on Aug 24 and 10th Athletics Bridge in Dubnica, Slovakia on Aug 26 (EA Classic).

NORWAY: First time ever Norway 1500 m runner was in olympic final, Henrik Ingebrigtsen after winning Helsinki European title clocked national record 3:35.43.

F. SANCHEZ: Another good quote from him: “When you´re a winner, you don´t want to come back and be average. Its like Bolt, but then if Bolt was in my event, I´d probably have retired by now.” His winning times Athens and London are identical 47.63.

SEBRLE: “My heel injury did not allow me to continue in the long jump. Also the 100 m was only so-so. But I have my 4th olympic participation. It was pity because after I changed my coaches in spring I was again after some years pretty fast. I was ready. Now I must still do one more year. Count with me for European Indoors and World Championships in Moscow, but after that I will really end my career.”

MILES: After no-heighting at 535 the US pole vaulter Derek Miles said this year will be end of his career and he will continue in the sport as full-time coach.

WINNING-STREAK: Robert Harting has one of the longest in current scene with 29 since August 2010 in Nottwil (Luzern EA meet) beaten by Spanish Mario Pestano.

STOCKHOLM: Yelena Isinbaeva confirmed her appearance at DN Galan of Stockholm on Aug 17. Also jumping there Fabiana Murer, Silke Spiegelburg and Angelica Bengtsson. The participation of other London medalists is under negotiations.

LIU XIANG: China Daily writes: His parents cried in their hotel room in suburban London. “He could not make it because his injury was too serious,” said his mother, Ji Fenhua. “It was really difficult for him to even make it to the st
arting line.” It was emblematic of his place in Chinese culture that even members of the media struggled to get a handle on their emotions. CCTV commentator Yang Jian broke down sobbing with millions of viewers watching. “Liu is a warrior,” Yang said. “After a race that was possibly the last of his career, the process and the result are hard for us to accept mentally, but that’s the ruthlessness of competitive sports.”
