Track spikes are to get you, fit and fast, from point a to point b as fast as possible. Cregg Weinmann has seen a few track spikes (few hundred) over the years. This is a fun review. So we asked Cregg to pick a Best Value and Best Shoe. The Brooks PR LD 3 is his best value! Read the review below and if you would like to read the entire review, click here: TFSpikes Sp2015.pdf

750,000 pairs of track spikes are made worldwide in 2015. Most brands make little or no money from them. Watch for the new stuff coming out in 2016 for the Olympics! Key to track spike biz: the young athletes who purchase track spikes (one in three in track), also purchase five pairs of training shoes a year. Some brands make a sprint and distance shoe, and a cross country shoe. Some brands make complete lines, to support the sport.

Brooks PR LD 3 Named Best Value Shoe in Fortius Media Group, LLC, Spring 2015 Track & Field Shoe Review

SAN JOSE, CA  – The Brooks PR LD 3 earned top honors in the Fortius Media Group’s 2015 Running Network Spring Track & Field Shoe Review.

“The 2015 Spring Shoe review and 2015 Spike review are two of our most popular and powerful reviews. The goal is to find the right shoe for your needs, and with the high quality of products available across North America, there are some great options,” noted Larry Eder, the publishing director of the Fortius Media Group, LLC. “Cregg Weinmann and his 300 plus wear testers have one goal, to help you find a great running shoe. Remember that their suggestions should be the starting point for your shoe search. Make sure your shoe search ends at a local run specialty store.”

The review process starts by matching shoes to the footstrike and shape of wear testers. Wear testers report periodically on seven key performance characteristics. A winner in each category is decided using a software system that calculates the data gathered from testers. The software system was developed by Cregg Weinmann, the Fortius Media Group’s footwear reviewer, producing a winner in each category.

The second update to the PR series focuses on improved materials, with a few minor nudges to shed weight where possible. The closed mesh upper includes sublimated graphics that add to eye appeal. Weight savings comes from paring back both the overlays–now fully welded, no-sew film–and strategically placed comfy ankle collar foam. The six-spike plate remains unchanged, providing consistent traction. The rearfoot is covered with sharkskin, with the exception of an unnecessary segment in the heel removed to shave grams. The full-length midsole is updated to molded EVA, providing enough cushioning even in longer races. Combining performance, aesthetics and price, the Brooks PR LD 3 earned the award for best value track and field shoe (Weinmann 2015).

“There are hundreds of shoes released each year, whether they are brand new to the scene or thoughtfully produced updates. With this kind of volume it is very difficult for the serious runner to keep track of changes to shoes that could work for them and the recreational runner that is still sorting out what a proper running shoe is has a completely daunting task. We try to pare this volume down to manageable bites,” said Weinmann. “Track spikes are valuable tools to the athlete who wants to excel. We try to give the best slice of what is new or updated so the athletes we serve with our publications have information that is valuable to them.”
