The first time I saw a pair of New Balance spikes in action was about 1991. I think it was Rocky Morris, a 14.28 110m high hurdler. Rocky was quick, and wonderful over the hurdles. When I asked him why he was wearing New Balance, he smiled and said, ” No one else is.”

That is track cool. Trying to have something no one else does.

New Balance LD 5000 v2 is our Best Shoe of 2015, as picked by Cregg Weinmann, Running Network’s long time Shoe Review Editor. If you would like to read the complete review, please click here: TFSpikes Sp2015.pdf

Special thanks to Cregg Weinmann, and Christine Johnson on the Track spike review. Special thanks to Breanne Ward on editing my notes and scribbles and make them a cogent press release.

New Balance LD 5000 v2 Named Best Shoe in Fortius Media Group, LLC, Spring 2015 Track & Field Shoe Review

SAN JOSE – New Balance’s LD 5000 v2 earned top honors in the Fortius Media Group’s 2015 Running Network Spring Track & Field Shoe Review.

“The 2015 Spring Shoe review and 2015 Spike review are two of our most popular and powerful reviews. The goal is to find the right shoe for your needs, and with the high quality of products available across North America, there are some great options,” noted Larry Eder, the publishing director of the Fortius Media Group, LLC. “Cregg Weinmann and his 300 plus wear testers have one goal, to help you find a great running shoe. Remember that their suggestions should be the starting point for your shoe search. Make sure your shoe search ends at a local run specialty store.”

Starting with the best running shoes available to consumers, shoes are carefully matched to the footstrike, motion and foot shape of wear testers. Testers evaluate the shoes throughout the 100 mile testing process on seven key performance characteristics. All tester data is entered into a software system developed by Cregg Weinmann, the Fortius Media Group’s footwear reviewer, producing a winner in each category.

As New Balance’s top distance spike, the 5000 features top-shelf technology. The closed mesh upper secures and supports the foot with a matrix of no-sew overlays, while still being very lightweight. The midsole is a thin, light layer of molded Revlite foam, with geometry designed to cushion responsively without adding unnecessary weight. The outersole is made up of a web of thermoplastic points, adding traction on synthetic surfaces along with four perimeter spikes. This combination allows the shoe to handle cross country’s natural surfaces with equal efficiency. The versatility and performance of the New Balance LD 5000 v2 earned it the award for best shoe track and field (Weinmann 2015).

“There are hundreds of shoes released each year, whether they are brand new to the scene or thoughtfully produced updates. With this kind of volume it is very difficult for the serious runner to keep track of changes to shoes that could work for them and the recreational runner that is still sorting out what a proper running shoe is has a completely daunting task. We try to pare this volume down to manageable bites,” said Weinmann. “Track spikes are valuable tools to the athlete who wants to excel. We try to give the best slice of what is new or updated so the athletes we serve with our publications have information that is valuable to them.”
