WORLD CLASS ATHLETICS IN AFRICA

‘LAGOS ANNIVERSARY CLASSIC’

Lagos State will host the ‘Lagos Anniversary Classic’ one-day athletics meeting on the evening of Wednesday 12th July 2017 as part of its celebrations to recognise the 50th Anniversary of the State in Nigeria.

The ‘Lagos Anniversary Classic’ will be endorsed by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and will take place at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, with some of the world’s best athletes as well as the local star athletes from Nigeria expected to compete.

Spencer Barden, Meeting Director, said: “Africa has a strong athletics heritage and this celebratory event is the perfect platform to showcase local and world-class athletes. In hosting a new international meeting, Lagos State supports the IAAF’s vision of expanding the global footprint for one-day meetings. Our goal in year one is to deliver a world-class meeting and to grow the meeting in year two where we hope to become an IAAF World Challenge level meeting”.

Deji Tinubu, Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, said: “We aim to achieve Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s vision of making Lagos an international sports hub and to do that it is essential to have a sports culture that inspires, motivates and excites people. There is no better way to do that than through events like the Lagos Anniversary Classic. This inaugural meeting presents a great platform for local and world class talent, will drive community engagement and grassroots development which will provide a great showcase for our prosperous and ambitious state.”

Further details on the meeting along with the event schedule will be made available over the coming weeks.
