2017 Cross Country Shoe Reviews: Saucony Kilkenny Spike/Spikeless

Saucony Kilkenny $65 Spike/$55 Spikeless

The Kilkenny is the oldest cross country model in the Saucony lineup, now in its 7th version. The platform retains its heritage - and why not? It has been effective from its introduction because it is a sleek and efficient racing shoe.

The upper is a tough closed mesh with lightweight fused overlays. A padded tongue offers a soft feel against the foot with a very thin layer of protection - really designed more to keep the wet and loose portion of the cross country course out of the shoe. The midsole is a full-length wedge of foam as much for cushion as it is to smooth the run over the roughness of the course. Four spikes along the perimeter add their grip to the effort. The rubber outersole features a zigzag pattern to grip the course, whether hard or soft, depending on the weather. The performance, fit, and price make it a solid cross country choice.
