The Bowerman Track Club is hosting a 5,000m race as men hunt for fast times. Check out the release below!

Bowerman Track Club Men Hunt for Times in Nike’s Iconic Track in the Forest in Portland Track’s Portland 5000

Beaverton, Oregon (September 10, 2019) – On Tuesday, September 10th at 9:00pm, a 5,000m race will take place at the Michael Johnson Track at Nike World Headquarters. Portland Track will host the event, which will feature a small group of competitors including two-time Olympian and 2019 USATF Champion in the 5,000m and 10,000m, Lopez Lomong, and 3rd place finisher in this year’s 5,000m national championship race, Woody Kincaid. The reigning Olympic Champion in the 1500m, Matthew Centrowitz will toe the line. The event will be paced by eight-time Canadian record holder, Moh Ahmed.

The Portland 5,000 will be the first sanctioned event held on the iconic track in the forest and is made possible by a familiar fixture to Oregon track fans. In a joint effort by Portland Track, The University of Oregon, Beynon Sports and Nike, the rail from historic Hayward Field that has delivered runners to so many transcendent performances has been installed at the track in Beaverton. The treasured feature will help guide the competitors to what promises to be an electric event in a setting second to none. “We could not be more happy to have Hayward Field’s rail repurposed at the Nike track for this and future events” said Michael Bergmann, President of Portland Track.

The event will be free to the public. Tracklandia host, Jeff Merrill will play master of ceremonies, and Derek Scott of Miles and Threads will provide musical accompaniment with festivities beginning at 8:30pm and culminating with the race at 9:00pm. The race will be streamed live by Runnerspace through Portland Track’s Tracklandia web page.

Lomong enters the race with a personal best of 13:11.63 in the 5,000m, Woody Kincaid with 13:12.22 and Centrowitz with 13:20.06. As previously stated, Lomong most recently won the 5,000m and 10,000m at the USATF Outdoor Championships. Woody Kincaid placed third in the tactical and thrilling 5,000m race behind Lomong and Olympic silver medalist, Paul Chelimo, and Centrowitz placed a close second in the 1500m championship behind Nike Oregon Project athlete, Craig Engels. The rabbit, Moh Ahmed carries a personal best of 12:58.16, set in Rome earlier this year. The 2020 Olympic A Standard in the men’s 5,000m is 13:13.50.
