Wayde Van Niekerk and Akane Simbine battled over the 200 meters today!

It was epic. Van Niekerk came off the turn, Wayde put it into another gear, and slowly moved past Simbini, who was battling to the finish.

The truth is this. To get back into world record shape, Wayde has taken 3 plus years to rebuild his fitness.

Will he get back to world record shape? I think so.

It is pretty amazing we have seen this journey back with Wayde to super stardom.

The LOC named Trace Skopil as CFO of Oregon22. The LOC is making statements with their hirings that show their commitment to Oregon, Lane County, and the legacy of Hayward Field.

This piece is about the recent coaching announcements by Christian Malcolm.

Change is scary in any organization. Malcolm needs to bring in a team that he believes is good for the sport.

In the media, our job is to present both sides of a controversy. I believe that we do that here.

We wish Darren Campbell and Tim Benjamin the best of luck. We also note that as an Olympic coach, Christian Malcolm is always going to be second-guessed.

That's part of the job.

The Texas Relays is always a rite of spring. Especially in 2021, Texas Relays has given athletes a chance to show their fitness!

Monday is the third week of speed development. Follow the workouts, and rest hydrate, and stretch.

IMG_0702.jpgWayde Van Niekerk, London 2017, photo by Mike Deering / The Shoe Addicts

Wayde Van Niekerk is a once-in-a-generation athlete. He's run himself so hard, he's run himself into unconsciousness.

Watch Wayde the Dreamer run. Wayde gets a good starting, positioning himself through the first 100m, and as the Dreamer opens his stride in the second 100m, you know that you are seeing someone special. As Van Niekerk flies around the turn, you catch your breath, and go, what is he doing! The last one hundred meters is sharp, brutal, but also beautiful as the Olympic champion and world record holder destroys the field.

Now, Wayde Van Niekerk is doing something unique. He's spent 28 months coming back from injury. How does one reach perfection twice?

That is what we are about to see with this tall, athletic South African who thanks to his creator with a sincerity that is unquestioned.

Will he make it all the way back? I hope so, but I am fascinated with watching and observing his journey...

I would most heartily applaud Toruń as host to a future World Athletics indoor Champs.

Socialing The Distance

with Larry Eder

Featuring Tom Bedford,

Race Director of the British Marathon Trials/Co-Founder of the Richmond RunFest

Bed.jpg

Tom Bedford is a curious sort. A former elite athlete, son of an elite athlete, Tom knows the sport from a rarified place. Yet, he seems to thrive on developing events in places and in formats that's are at best, problematic and at worst, difficult to manage.

Tom and his wife, Jade, have developed a successful race management company, the unique Richmond Distance Festival. Tom seems at his best when dealing with events, and situations that many would be intimidated by.

Now, Tom Bedford and Jade plus his father, David Bedford, have been building an event, the 2021 British Olympic Marathon Trials, plus 20k and 50k Trials.

This remarkable event, the first singular British Olympic Marathon Trials held in 40 years. Putting an event like this together, in a pandemic is asking for trouble. I believe, Tom Bedford likes a challenge. He gets it, dealing with 3 Trials events. On the same day, with many different demands as elite events.

Elite events not only go much faster, but much more is on the line. Two male marathon spots, 3 women's spots are huge. Both race walks require judges watching events of 12.4 miles and 31.6 miles.

The course? A small 1.666 k loop and 12 3.333 k loops. A good, honest course with few fans and much on the line.

On March 26, 2021, the British Olympic Marathon, 20k Racewalk, and 50k Racewalk Trials will be held. And it will be magnificent.

Enjoy the interview.

Overseas fans banned in Tokyo.

Probably worst kept secret in Olympic media. No bad guys here but pandemic. I wish LOC, IOC, and Government could be seamless in their communications.

Without fans, hotel sales, restaurants, street food, mementos will be terribly affected.

How will it affect the quality and fiscal vitality of the Olympics? Remember, IOC has about $2 billion US in insurance, which means that the estimated $15 billion to $20 billion spent on Tokyo 2020 infrastructure could be lost.

This is a moving, living, breathing entity. Stay tuned. Inside the Games doing a brilliant job in non-sensationalizing this important story!

Why do I love this workout?

I used to warm up, a couple miles, then do these repeats at the Rose Garden, San Jose, CA. This workout has you going 250 plus meters a run and it helps sharpen you.

I used to love this sharpening without once a week to race a good 3000m, 5000m or 10,000m.

In 2021, the World Athletics Indoor Tour was a huge success.

In 2021, the success of the World Athletics Indoor Tour was not guaranteed. Juggling 1,353 athletes, 11 meetings, local and global media , WA and their partners delivered an exciting and well received meet series.

Success was not guaranteed, but the series was much needed. Those who are inspired by running, jumping and throwing saw some amazing moments!

It was a crazy weekend of athletics. From Thursday to Saturday, in the famed Tyson Athletics Center, an NCAA Indoor champs was held where athletes ran, jumped and threw at levels that showed their frustration at missing an entire year of indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and cross country due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Today, March 15, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, they held the NCAA cross country championships, at Oklahoma State University.
David Monti wrote this piece on the amazing day of races that celebrated collegiate cross country, which we use with permission from Race Results Weekly.

After a hard-fought race, it was BYU's Conner Mantz who took home the individual title at the men's NCAA cross country championship with a time of 29:26.1. Mantz became the first American to win the individual title since Oregon's Galen Rupp in 2008. Meanwhile, Northern Arizona won the team title, giving them four NCAA cross country championships in the last 5 seasons.

When World Athletics sent over a press release and invite on the virtual launch, I took some time to check out this museum. I have gone back five times and expect to go back more.

Museum of World Athletics is a celebration of our sport. Using a 3d format developed by Dysport, a digital sports company led by Olympic gold medalist and 2004 World Indoor Champion Jason Gardener.

If World Athletics wants to get out the cool history and emotion of our sport, then they have gone down a good road. The artifacts, photos, video bring the stories to the viewer, and the objects bring it alive.

Well done WA! The Museum of Athletics is a global celebration of sport! We highly recommend keeping the link close and sharing with track friends!

This is Socialing the Distance Featuring Lynna Irby. Lynna is an adidas sponsored athlete who trains with PURE Athletics, and is coached by Lance Braumann. Lynna has impressive PBs: 11.27 at 100m, 22.25 at 200m (also 22.06), and 49.80 at 400m. Lynna won the 2018 NCAA 400m in PB 49.80. Last summer, Lynna the won the 400m Monaco DL 2020 , in 50.50. In 2015, Lynna won silver at the 400m distance at World U18 Champs. In 2016, Lynna won silver at the Wold U20 Champs at the 400m.

Lynna Irby was an enjoyable interview: she gave us a view into the challenges of being an elite athlete in the pandemic. She also has had the best launch night on a Socialing video that we have ever had!

A special thanks to Chris Layne and Total Sports for setting up this interview.

Long runs on Sundays were part of my weekly training for years. I enjoyed long runs and found the value of them outside of developing endurance. I spent the time enjoying the visuals and worked out many daily life challenges. Enjoy the run.

In his weekly piece, Justin Lagat helps us appreciate the challenges via the pandemic that Kenyan Athletics is responding to with their meet protocals.

When I did this workout well, I was pumped and ready to race! When you really want a test, change to 20 x 30 seconds on a football pitch, cut jog to 90 seconds and see what you can do! Dynamo Hum!

Watching Wayde Van Niekerk compete is one of those unforgettable moments in athletics. Speaking with Wayde, one was always impressed with his modesty, sense of humor and sense of direction. In watching how intensely, but patiently that Wayde Van Niekerk built himself back to compete, one is impressed by the focus, but also, one appreciates the amazing level that Wayde Van Niekek is planning to regain.

I waited a day to write on this one, the women's 1,500m.

I was watching a replay on the women's 1,500 meters from Torun, and one BBC announcer called the women's 1,500m a "bumpy" race.

How appropriate!

The women's 1,500m was the most physical race on the weekend, and also the most frustrating.

Monday is an easy day. It is important that you take the time to stretch, and give your body time to recover, so keep the run at a pace that is relaxed. Keep the stride outs brisk and then cool down.

Portugal won two medals in Torun. Both were gold medals. Both were in the Triple Jump. Stuart Weir did this piece on the amazing Triple jumping that comes out of Portugal! (Don't you remember Nelson Evora?)

Many of us have done the triple jump. We called it the "hop, skip and jump" in school. The technique is challenging and it takes good core strength to manage the pressure that the TJ puts on one's mortal engine.

1305831912.jpgAlja Del Pointe, 2021 European Athletics Indoor Champs, photo by European Athletics

It all came down to this. On the final day in the 36th European Athletics Indoor Championships, Alja Del Pointe, a Swiss sprinter who competed 15 times at the 60m (heats and finals), in 2021, and two times at the 200m distance, put it all together in one paradigm changing event.

1305832689.jpgAlja Del Pointe, 2021 European Athletics Indoor Champs, photo by European Athletics

Alja Del Pointe won the EA Indoor Championships Women's 60m on Sunday, 7 March 2021 in Torun, Poland. She did it in the midst of a pandemic, and she ran 7.03, the Wold leader, erasing the EL of 7.08 by Dina Asher-Smith, GB, and the WL of 7.07 by Javianne Oliver, USA. Alja also equalled the Swiss national record.

1305832779.jpgAlja Del Pointe, 2021 European Athletics Indoor Champs, photo by European Athletics

In the final, Alja Del Pointe had a good start. She began pulling away early from the field, and winning by .19, a space of some magnitude. Del Pointe took gold in 7.03, Lotta Kemppinen, Finland, 7.22, and Orlan Ombissa Dzangue, France, 7.23.

Her incredulity at how her dreams had been made reality can be seen in the photos! Enjoy!

This is the second piece on Sunday's championship events. Twelve events in two hours! Was that fun! Stuart Weir did this piece on the hurdles.

In a race that was totally championship indoors, the women's 1,500m was quite satisfying, especially when Holly Ache was reinstated. This is Stuart Weirs' 5th piece on day 2!

The women's long jump was an amazing competition on Day 2. The last round had a huge 6.92m jump by Marya Bekh-Romanchuk, taking the lead from Malaika Mihambo, who had led with her 6.88m, until the big leap. Stuart Weir wrote his 4th piece of the day on the women's LJ, an exciting competition.

What an incredible Saturday! The 2021 EA Indoor Champs has had amazing distribution on the medals, with 14 counties now represented!

This is story 1 in six today by Stuart Weir, and he begins with an excellent one!

I used this workout to see how tough I was. I did it on a baseball Diamond, and sometimes a soccer pitch. Ealy in the season, this workout was a good one. Enjoy.

1305462695.jpgJodie Williams, photo by European Athletics

This is update on day 1 by EME News on some exciting notes on day one.

This is the updated version of the Men's 1,500m piece. As editor (that's me, Larry Eder), I decided to post both pieces. The Men's 1,500m happened in real-time and the rule is, well, one that makes athletics look silly. The athlete was captured on a photo showing the happiness of winning and must have experienced something less than positive on the DQ.

Indoor athletics is like roller derby anyway, and with 13 middle-distance runners on a 200m track, in a championship event, physical entanglements will happen. 13 middle-distance runners on a 200m track going at 3:54 mile pace mean that someone could go down.

Jakub Ingebrigtsen could have gone down, he did not. He did not impede the athletes or gain an advantage. Hopefully, officials can see the video and note that Jakub was not in any way doing something wrong, he was doing what we all want to see him do: compete with emotion and power.

And that, he did. This is 4th piece on day 1. My counting can be challenging.

This is the original piece on the Men's 1,500m, when Jakub Ingebrigtsen was disqualified at the end of the race, due to a lane violation. We will post the second version next. This is piece 3 on Day 1.

This is the update on a complete day 1, March 5, 2021, at the 2021 European indoor championships, in Torun, Poland. This piece was by Stuart Weir, as he covered his 5th EA Indoor Champs, except this one was done remotely.

This is Friday, and it is an easy day. Enjoy it.

The EA 2021 Indoor Champs is on! Will Poland just blow 46 other countries away in Torun? We think so!

This is update on session 1 on 4 March 2021. Big day on March 5!

I liked the 1,500m heats. It is just tough not seeing an audience.

Tirunesh Dibaba is an iconic athlete. I have loved watching her in the World Champs and the Olympics. I have been lucky enough to see all her global medals since 2003. I have missed one marathon (2018).

How will she do in NN Mission Marathon Hamburg?

Tirunesh Dibaba will come to Hamburg in good shape, she does not just show up. She is tremendously competitive.

Just over a month to wait and see how much Tirunesh Dibaba wants to compete.

This new ten meet series will give U.S. athletes some chances to compete in the pandemic era.

This is a piece on Javianne Oliver, the top sprinter, who took the WL in the 60m, with a 7.08. Stuart Weir did this piece. Please enjoy!

This is Tuesday. This is a gentle speed play. Do it on the trails, or a soccer pitch. Keep it at a good pace, and you will be tired.

Sandi Morris opened at ATL 2 with 4.81m. We asked Sandi what would be a good opening height, 4.75-4.81m. Sandi is always good

in interviews. She was confident that she would jump and just see where she is this week.
