BIRMINGHAM (GBR, Feb 19): Keely Hodgkinson enjoyed a great 2022 debut with a world lead and NR for 800m, while global champions Armand Duplantis, Grant Holloway, Elaine-Thompson Herah, and Noah Lyles impressed at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham (WIT Gold, in summary, 3 World leads). Some 5000 spectators saw in the final race of the evening Hodgkinson’s 1:57.20 as the fastest indoor time for 20 years and the quickest ever by a teenager. She followed the pacemaker’s 58.58 for 400m and then heard the bell at 1:28.35 before going to sixth on the world all-time list indoors. Catriona Bisset set an Australian record 1:59.46 for second and previous world leader Natoya Goule was third with 1:59.85. Duplantis cleared 5.81m but, after passes, needed three attempts at 6.05 WL. He had three goes at a would-be world record 6.19m, the last of which had the bar coming down only after a wobble. Thiago Braz was second with 5.81m. Elaine Thompson-Herah won the 60m on her season debut in 7.08 from Daryll Neita’s 7.11. Grant Holloway was dominant as he extended his unbeaten run over 60m hurdles and clocked 7.41 despite a small jump over the line. Andy Pozzi was second with 7.59. Noah Lyles, stepping down to 60m, set a PB of 6.55 for the win over Ronnie Baker (6.55) and Elijah Hall (6.56). Eleanor Patterson had another win over Mariya Lasitskene, this time 1.97m to 1.91m. PBs went to the first five in the 1500m as Abel Kipsang led the way on 3:34.57. Adel Mechaal was second with 3:35.30 and Robert Farken third with 3:35.44. In the 800m, Collins Kipruto, with a PB of 1:45.39 overtook Elliot Giles (1:45.42 SB) with Alvarro De Arriba (1:45.82 SB) third. Isabelle Boffey took the 1000m in 2:38.25 WL after Jemma Reekie, going for a fast time, faded badly to sixth. Kahmari Montgomery won the 400m in 45.72 from Liemarvin Bonevacia (46.08). In third, Edward Faulds broke Thomas Schonlebe’s 38-year European indoor U20 record with 46.16. Stephanie Ann McPherson took the women’s event in 51.39, coming past Lieke Klaver (51.49) at the end. Khaddi Sagnia’s 6.70m was enough to win the long jump over Akela Jones (6.52m) with Ivana Vuleta third (6.51m) and Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk no-marking. Dawit Seyaum set a season’s best of 4:04.35 to win the 1500m with Sarah Healy second on 4:06.94 Irish U23 record and Linden Hall (4:07.36). Zoe Sedney won the 60m hurdles with 8.02 by three-hundredths from Ditaji Kambundji.
