TOKYO 2025 DAY 8
QUOTES OF THE DAY

“I expected the race to be really competitive and very fast but I wanted to make sure to just win this gold. Now I need to defend this title. I want to be a double world champion. Maybe I will start to think about the world record too. It may not happen now, but I also want to win gold in Los Angeles in 2028. That’s the biggest goal,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi.
“My goal here was to reach the final so I am very emotional, in shock. I still can’t believe it. I compete to improve myself. I have an internal battle to improve myself. I am very proud of my performance and that of Paola (Milena Torres, ECU, 35km race walk bronze medallist), and all the Latin American women here. I trust myself, and my coach puts a lot of trust in me and the work we have done together. My training partner Flor Denis (Ruiz) won silver two years ago and I thought I could be at that level one day. I dreamed of a world medal since I started athletics. I have faced some adversities, such as two surgeries in my left knee. But I persevered. I never gave up,” Yuleisy Angulo.
RESULT OF THE DAY
Emmanuel Wanyonyi 1:41.86 800 m meet record, all finalists clocked sub 1:43.

RELAY Relay Decisions
4 x 100m Men – South Africa: Following an accidental collision between the Italian and South African teams in heat 2 of the men’s 4 x 100m Relay, the Referee has decided to offer South Africa an additional opportunity to qualify for the final. This additional race will take place on Sunday morning at 10:33am and the team will run alone in lane 6. The team must be comprised of the same runners who ran the heat on Saturday, and in the same order. If the South African team runs 38.34 or better (the 8th placed time qualified for the final) they will be come the 9th team in the final and will run in lane 1.
4 x 400m Men – USA and Kenya: In heat 1 of the men’s 4 x 400m relay, both the USA and Kenya teams were seriously impeded by Zambia resulting in both teams missing the opportunity to qualify for the final. Following the disqualification of Zambia, the Referee has decided to offer both USA and Kenya the opportunity to race for lane 1 in the final, in addition to the 8 already qualified teams. The teams must be comprised of the same runners who ran the heat on Saturday, and in the same order. The teams will start the rerun, which will take place on Sunday morning at 10:40am, in the same lanes as in the heat on Saturday. USA starts in lane 4 and Kenya starts in lane 7.
