“I expected the race to be really competitive and very fast but I wanted to make sure to just win this gold. Now I need to defend this title. I want to be a double world champion. Maybe I will start to think about the world record too. It may not happen now, but I also want to win gold in Los Angeles in 2028. That’s the biggest goal,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

“My goal here was to reach the final so I am very emotional, in shock. I still can’t believe it. I compete to improve myself. I have an internal battle to improve myself. I am very proud of my performance and that of Paola (Milena Torres, ECU, 35km race walk bronze medallist), and all the Latin American women here. I trust myself, and my coach puts a lot of trust in me and the work we have done together. My training partner Flor Denis (Ruiz) won silver two years ago and I thought I could be at that level one day. I dreamed of a world medal since I started athletics. I have faced some adversities, such as two surgeries in my left knee. But I persevered. I never gave up,” Yuleisy Angulo.

RESULT OF THE DAY
Emmanuel Wanyonyi 1:41.86 800 m meet record, all finalists  clocked sub 1:43.

This additional race will take place on Sunday morning at 10:33am and the team will run alone in lane 6. The team must be comprised of the same runners who ran the heat on Saturday, and in the same order. If the South African team runs 38.34 or better (the 8th placed time qualified for the final) they will be come the 9th team in the final and will run in lane 1.

4 x 400m Men – USA and Kenya: In heat 1 of the men’s 4 x 400m relay, both the USA and Kenya teams were seriously impeded by Zambia resulting in both teams missing the opportunity to qualify for the final. Following the disqualification of Zambia, the Referee has decided to offer both USA and Kenya the opportunity to race for lane 1 in the final, in addition to the 8 already qualified teams. The teams must be comprised of the same runners who ran the heat on Saturday, and in the same order. TOKYO NEWS (with help from World Athletics info)

TOKYO (JPN): Spectator figures on day eight: morning session: 25,818 and evening session: 58,221.

TOKYO (JPN): For the first time in World Championships history, there was a shared medal in the combined events with Katarina Johnson-Thompson (GBR) and Taliyah Brooks (USA). “Honestly, I thought it was a joke at first. I was like, ‘Why are we both showing up as bronze on the screen?’ I didn’t really celebrate until they put the medal around my neck,” said Johnson-Thompson.

TOKYO (JPN): Ethiopia came away empty-handed for the second successive women’s 5000m final at the World Championships. Ethiopia are still yet to win a gold medal at the championships.

TOKYO (JPN): There were national records for both Cian McPhillips (IRL) and Navasky Anderson (JAM) who finished fourth and seventh in 1:42.15 and 1:42.76 respectively. They were 38th and 37th on the final entry-list for Tokyo.

TOKYO (JPN): Competing in an unprecedented 10th successive world final, Gong Lijiao (CHN) finished ninth with 18.96m. “It’s incredible to think I have competed in 10 world championships. Reflecting on my first participation back in 2007, some of my teammates hadn’t even been born yet,” she said.

TOKYO (JPN):  Fastest 4×400 m legs in men heats by Daniel Segers from Belgium 43.71 and among women Natalia Bukowiecka 49.42.

TOKYO (JPN): Alison Dos Santos and Abderrahman Samba were be escorted from competition after ceremony to warm-up area in the stadium.  Amy Hunt was transferred by separate transport to the warm-up venue at around 18:00, directly after the medal ceremonies. Women 400 m hurdles ceremony was brought forward to 12.40.

TOKYO (JPN): The Closing Ceremony will take place between the end of competition and start of the post competition medal ceremonies. It is scheduled to last ten minutes from 21:30 to 21:40 and will include the following components: Opening announcement / highlights of the championships / thank you volunteers video /, handover announcement and ceremony.

TOKYO (JPN): The 2023 World triple jump champion Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso announced his retirement.

TOKYO (JPN): Triple olympic Champion Nafi Thiam pulled out of the women’s heptathlon. She has been embroiled in a feud with the Belgian Athletics Federation because: Her physio was denied accreditation, forcing her to get treatment outside the training facilities. She accuses the federation of boycotting her for refusing to sign their “code of conduct” over image rights, which clashes with her sponsors. The federation insists her claims are false and says they have written proof. Despite the tension, both sides say they’re still open to talks. Based on media reports.
