This is a release on the BAA Middle School Cross country Championships, which happened earlier today. Midde School cross country is a big sport in the U.S. Cross country is the first experience that many get with our sport. Special thanks to the story and the photos from BAA. BAA and adidas did a really good thing with this program. Thanks to Chris Lotsbom, one of the very special people in this sport.

Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships Take Center Stage at Franklin Park

Nearly 300 students took part in individual and relay races at Franklin Park to crown Boston’s Fastest Middle Schoolers

Franklin Park, Boston, Mass. (23-Oct) – On a picture-perfect autumn morning, the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) hosted the 2025 Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships today at Franklin Park. Nearly 300 student-athletes from ten City of Boston schools competed to crown the fastest runners in the city. Covering almost a mile around the Playstead Field, all participants earned a unicorn finisher medal.

Since 1997, the B.A.A., Boston Public Schools, and Boston Parks and Recreation have hosted the Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships to celebrate healthy lifestyles and promote physical fitness among Boston youths. Approximately 14,000 student-athletes have participated in the event since its inception.

Complete Boston Middle School Cross Country Championships results are available here. Team point totals are based on the sum of each school’s top five finisher placings.

WCVB TV, the official broadcast partner of B.A.A. races, was on hand to provide coverage of the day’s races.

Eliot K-8 Innovation School tallied a perfect score of 15 points in the Girls Race, led by Mairin Goff successfully defending her individual title. Goff blitzed the .95-mile route in 5:54.4 with ease.

“This is my third time running this event and second time winning it,” said Goff. “It feels really good.”

Eliot School swept places one through six. Joining Goff in the top ten for Eliot School were Caleigh Moore (2nd, 6:11.2), Callie McHugh (3rd, 6:16.1), Morgan Childs (4th, 6:22.6), Alexis Uber (5th, 6:28.9), Madison Bonosoro (6th, 6:30.8), and Madeline Silveira (8th, 6:39.9). O’Bryant School was the second-place Girls team (53 points) followed by Curley K8 (110 points). O’Bryant’s Akyla Oruma (7th, 6:36.3), Charlotte Bath (9th, 6:44.5) and Alison Conway (10th, 6:46.8) completed the top ten.

The Boys Race came down to a three-way sprint. Matias Builes Chavarriaga (O’Bryant School) outlasted Patrick Goff (Eliot School) and Jack Heaton (Warren Prescott) down the stretch, all crossing the finish within two seconds of each other. Builes Chavarriaga’s winning time was 5:24.8, while Goff ran 5:26.0 and Heaton timed 5:26.8. Rounding out the top five individuals were George Richey (Eliot, fourth in 5:39.2) and Jeremiah Heaton (O’Bryant, fifth in 5:39.4).

“I was fifth last year so to win it this year feels amazing,” said Builes Chavarriaga. “It feels really amazing. I feel so good about myself.”

The Boys Team title was a nailbiter, with Eliot K-8 Innovation School scoring a two point win over O’Bryant School, 35 to 37. In addition to Goff, George Richey, Theo Brown, Tyler Kaschel, Rorey Herrick, Caleb Frederick, and Treyson Scarpa were part of Eliot’s scoring squad. Warren Prescott (81 points) was the third-place Boys team.

The Co-Ed Relay closed the day’s action, with two heats racing against the clock. Warren Prescott came out on top by a mere half second, winning in 43.2 seconds to O’Bryant’s 43.7 seconds and Kilmer Upper School’s 45.2 seconds. All ten competing teams finished the four-person relay in fewer than 51 seconds – with 7.51 seconds separating first and tenth place teams.

All finishers were presented B.A.A. unicorn medals by two-time Olympian and B.A.A. High Performance Team Coach Mark Carroll, who was joined by professional runners from the B.A.A. High Performance Team.

Thursday’s races not only served as the City’s cross-country championship meet, but also as a qualifier event for April’s B.A.A. Middle School 1K. The B.A.A. Middle School 1K is held as part of the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, where athletes from each of the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon route compete on Boylston Street.
