Massey sweeps throws titles at Hayward Field to stamp World U20 credentials

There is a natural feeling of arrival around Jaslene Massey at Hayward Field, the kind of setting that already looks ready to become part of her story as she prepares to spend the next four years competing for the University of Oregon. The future Duck came into the USATF U20 Championships with so much confidence, and over two days in Eugene, she swept the women’s discus and shot put titles and secured her place on Team USA for the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Her discus title came with the assurance of an athlete who knew exactly where she belonged at such a young age, as Massey opened the competition with a throw of 55.57m, a mark strong enough to apply immediate pressure on the field and set the direction of the event from the first round. That opening throw gave her control, and then her final attempt carried historic weight, with the Aliso Niguel standout sending the discus out to 60.27m and strengthening her position as the No. 2 high school discus thrower in U.S. history.

That sixth-round throw gave the competition a different scale, because Massey was already clear of the field and still found the power and composure to chase the record book. The 60.27m mark moved her ahead of Sidney Vaughan’s former U.S. high school No. 2 all-time throw of 60.07m, placing Massey deeper into one of the most exclusive spaces in American high school throwing history. Massey and Vaughan now own the top five farthest throws ever produced by U.S. high school girls, a remarkable reminder of the level Massey has already reached before beginning her collegiate career.

The shot put followed with the same sense of dominance, and Massey again showed why she’s the top thrower in High school in the US. After opening with a foul, she responded with 16.17m on her second attempt to take command, then kept building until her fifth-round throw of 16.88m pushed her personal best into another historic level. That mark moved her to No. 5 on the U.S. high school all-time list and completed a double that confirmed her as the country’s leading young throws talent across two demanding disciplines.

What made the performance stand out was the way Massey managed the moment, because Hayward Field can feel enormous for young athletes with Team USA selection on the line, and she competed as if the stage had already become familiar. Her series told the story of an athlete with championship patience, one who can take the lead early, stay calm through the pressure of a national meet, and still find her biggest response late in the competition.

Massey’s rise has carried a rare balance, with discus excellence and shot put strength advancing side by side throughout the season. Her California campaign already had the feel of a historic run after her 59.84m discus throw at the CIF State Championships and her 16.08m shot put victory, then the USATF U20 Championships added international purpose to the numbers, placing her on the path back to Hayward Field for a global age-group championship in August.

For Oregon, this was a glimpse of what was to come. For Team USA, it was the arrival of a thrower capable of making an impact in more than one event on the World U20 stage in less than two months. For Massey, it was the continuation of a season that keeps finding new levels at exactly the right time, with Hayward Field now serving as both her future home and the place where one of America’s best young throwers made her national breakthrough feel complete.
