Pathirage wins loaded javelin
GLASGOW (GBR, Jul 31): Sri Lankan DL meet winner and World leader Rumesh Pathirage topped the javelin with a big 89.75 during Friday evening at the Commonwealth Games. Other medals for India: Olympic winner Neeraj Chopra 85.83 SB and Yashvir Singh 85.41 PB. Fourth remained for double World champion Anderson Peters 83.88 and reigning World champion Keshorn Walcott 6th 82.55. Olympic winner Arshad Nadeem only 9th, 77.41.
In the 200 m sprint finals, South African Sinesipho Dambile clocked 19.96 (+1.7) and won gold ahead of Udodi Onwuzurike 20.09 and Jamaican Christopher Taylor 20.11 PB, with close fourth Aaron Brown 20.18.
As expected, Adaejah Hodge from the British Virgin Islands was clearly the best in the women’s final in 22.07 (+1.7). Silver for Shaniqua Bascombe from Trinidad 22.35 and bronze for Jamaican Alana Reid 22.56, just edging Ashanti Moore 22.57 and Lavanya Williams 22.62.
Georgia Hunter-Bell dominated the 800 m final in 1:59.51 over reigning World champion Lilian Odira 2:00.58 and Sarah Billings 2:00.61.
Jamaican Sanique Walker beat England’s hope Emily Newnham in the women’s 400 m hurdles, 54.00 PB to 54.04. Bronze for Canadian record holder Savannah Sutherland 54.16 over Lina Nielsen 54.69. Men’s final for Nigerian favorite Ezekiel Nathaniel 48.47, followed by Jake Minshull 48.99 and Assinie Wilson 49.22.
Young Australian Isaac Beacroft (19) won the 10 000 m track walk in 38:45.51 U20 NR with surprise second Kenyan Stephen Ndangiri Kihu 38:46.57 NR and only third World champion Evan Dunfee 40:03.39.
For women, pole vault gold was enough at 465, as Eliza McCartney, on her first attempt, beat Olympic winner Nina Kennedy (465 in 2nd attempt) on countback. Both tried unsuccessfully at 470. Bronze for Imogen Ayris 455.
Grenadian Lindon Victor, with top throws, moved to first place in the decathlon and won his third gold in a row: 8096 (53.52 discus, 63.06 javelin) and overcame leader Damian Warner (only 37.61 and 55.54), who scored 8036 for silver. Bronze for Tejaswin Shankar 7976.
