“I finally have a (European) outdoor medal, and it’s a gold – that feels insane. This is a real relief, honestly. It still hasn’t sunk in completely. This is the medal I’ve wanted for a very long time. Winning by a thousandth, this was unnecessary. I’m a really big perfectionist, always thinking about things that could have gone better. I guess I will forget about the small mistakes very soon because I have this gold, and that’s what I was after. I am so proud I managed to stay calm. It just gives a lot of confidence, as there have been times when people have been asking why it never worked out outdoors, asking where I was lacking. I knew that this might be my last Euros, or maybe my penultimate Euros. I don’t have many chances left. I tried not to think about that too much but just wanted to see this as another competition. BIRMINGHAM (GBR): “It’s now been two and a half months since that injury in China,” Mattia Furlani wrote on Instagram. “Two months in which the primary goal was to recover as best as possible to try to return to the platform healthy, even before performing well. Today I felt good, I came on strong, and evidently my body, at certain intensities, wasn’t yet ready to return to the speed I was used to, which led to a relapse. These past months have probably been the worst times yet: I’m experiencing a lack of confidence in myself and my abilities, which have only grown lately, making the path a bit blurry. BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Incredible level of the women’s 800m heats, as ten runners improved their lifetime bests (six of them in the first heat, including the national records for Italy and Greece). Eloisa Coiro improved a long-standing Italian record of Gabriella Dorio from 1980.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): “I am so proud of myself, at the end of the day it is all about getting the gold medal,” said Amy Hunt after winning the 100m final. “It’s not about the execution and how far back I was at 30m to go, I am not going to remember that in a few years’ time, just that I won a fabulous gold. As I crossed the line, I could have screamed; I could have cried. Everyone knows I am not that emotional and not that good at showing my emotions, but this win is incredibly special to me, with it being the first [European Championships] in the UK.” Via UK Athletics.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): World bronze medallist in the event, Jimmy Gressier, fell short in his quest for a European medal in the 5,000m (4th place) on Monday evening. “I didn’t come here for that. I’m off to a bad start at the Championships, but I’m already focused on the 10,000m because I know I’m in good shape. I had a very good feeling, but the tactics weren’t right; we made a complete mistake. With the staff, we wanted to tire out the 1,500m runners who were moving up to the 5,000m. I also knew that Jakob (Ingebrigtsen) wasn’t at his peak, and I wanted to tire him out.” At one point, I passed him, three laps from the finish. He looked at me and laughed because he knew it was between us, so to speak. For me, (Ingebrigtsen) is the best runner of all time, I have enormous respect for him. I’m not giving up; I’m moving forward immediately, and I’m focused on the 10,000m. Great things are going to happen.” Via L’Equipe.
