We are posting a few of our past season’s cross country racing shoes, as this coming weekend is huge for cross country sales. The four shoes that we are posting today are great shoes for the 550,000 high school boys and girls about to race this coming 2018-19 season. We will also post new shoe reviews shortly.

This is the review of the Altra Golden Spike, a fine cross country shoe from Altra Running. Cregg Weinmann has reviewed footwear and apparel for California Track & Running News since the mid 1990s, and for the RunningNetwork since 1998. If you would like to see this review on Running Product Reviews, please go to: Altra Golden Spike, $90. At RunBlogRun, our goal is help you find the perfect shoe for you. Our suggestions: always visit your local running stores at end of day, take a clean pair of running socks, and try on five to six different brands, and jog around in them. Real running stores allow you to check the right show for you. For more reviews, go to www.runningproductreviews.com.

The Golden Spike, introduced last fall, continues as a top quality cross country spike with the brand’s dual mantra of a zero drop profile and roomy toe. The upper is a ripstop minimesh supported by fused overlays, with a thin, sueded tongue and ankle collar.

The fit is racer-snug in the heel. Up front, however, it broadens into the roomy “foot-shaped” fit Altra’s known for, though here it’s just a bit snugger since the Golden Spike is a racing shoe. The midsole is a dual layer setup, with Altra’s A-Bound compound nearest the foot. The outersole is minimal, and lugs run the length of the lateral side, with toughened foam lugs medially. A 5-spike arrangement, two under the first and second toes and a trio placed under the metatarsals, offers additional grip on natural surfaces.

Sizes: Unisex (Men) 4-13

Weight: Men 6.1 oz. (size 11, w/ 5 spikes)

Fit: snug heel, roomy forefoot
