Let’s face it, if you are going to fly across the pond to Central Europe and visit Hungary for a couple weeks, you want to do more than watch the finest track & field athletes in the world.
How to properly view a World Championships and enjoy the city of Budapest.

Here are five suggestions for doing the tourist, the track geek things, and being a relaxed Central European, enjoying the evenings and the rest of the days.
1. The finals will be in the evening sessions! All of the track finals will be in evening sessions during the World Championships. All of the road finals will be in six sessions in the mornings.
2. Two mornings completely off, Days 3 and 4! These are the days to take an early tour of the World Heritage sites in Budapest or just enjoy a nice coffee and pastry in a cafe somewhere in Budapest!
3. Morning sessions are a great way to see the future of the sport. Many athletes will be experiencing the World Champs competition for the first time. I like to find an event, say the 100 meters, and watch how many young athletes get through to the semi-finals. It is tough, tough, tough!
4. Learn about a new event! What do you know about the javelin, what do you know about the triple jump, what do you know about the steeplechase? Adopt an event that you know little about, and learn about it.
5. Most nights, the evening sessions will end between 9 pm and 10 pm! Still time for a light dinner, some beverages with friends, or a nice walk through a neighborhood in Budapest.
I have been to 13 world championships. From my first in Goteborg in 1995 until Eugene in 2022, I found new places to go, new people to meet, and new things to appreciate. Budapest should be incredible, do not miss it!
