I love this column by Walt Murphy. Today he honors Matt Guisto, Matt Downin, Carrie Tollefson, among others.

From 1990 to 1999, I missed perhaps one FootLocker champs. I remember Matt Downin and John Mortimer, as I had lived in New Hampshire for a couple of years, and was truly struck by the toughness of Downin and Mortimer in San Diego.

My take on Guisto was that I had a hard time putting the monster on the track with the nice guy away from the track. Guisto was tremendously tough on the track, perhaps even tougher on cross country. Guisto ran with the likes of Jim Schankel, who was just, well, a beastmaster. At one time, Jim owned Cal Poly SLO records for 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m as well as mile, two, three mile and oh, yes, six mile.

My memories of Schankel were always of a guy who ran his heart out. I watched him in 1980, at the Martin Luther King JR Games at Stanford, duke it out with Henry Marsh and Ron Addison over the steeplechase. Schankel would not give up, but Marsh was there to show who was the man in the steeple. Schankel could hardly walk afterwards, he lost by a few seconds in an 8:46 race.

This Day in X-Country

December 10

1983–Matt Giusto was the upset winner of the boys race at the Kinney(now Foot Locker) Championsips on a soggy course in San Diego. Giusto, competing for Arizona,  would win the 5000 meters at the 1988 NCAA Championships and made the 1996 U.S..Olympic team in the 5000.
Janet Smith won the girls race by more than 30 seconds, and her winning time of 16:43, a course record at the time, is still the 4th-fastest on the Balboa Park layout.
Other notable finishers
Boys: 7.Brad Hudson, 14.John Scherer, 16.Joe Falcon, 30.Mark Coogan

1994–New Hampshire buddies Matt Downin(Pinkerton Academy) and John Mortimer (Londonderry). finished 1-2 in the boys race at the Foot Locker Championships in San Diego. Both went on to have  All-American careers at Wisconsin and Michigan, respectively.
Other notable finishers http://www.footlockercc.com/history/1994boys.htm9.Sharif Karie, 10.Tim Broe, 24.Brent Hauser, 29.Brad Hauser
Sophomore Julia Stamps ran away from the field to win the girls race in 16:41, still the 2nd-fastest time ever run on the course. 2nd was junior Sally Glynn and 3rd was senior Mary Cobb. All three would wind up as teammates at Stanford and would lead the Cardinal to a 2nd place finish at the 1997 NCAA X-Country Championships.
Also in the field were future stars Amy Yoder-Begley(11th), Amy Skieresz(14th), and Carrie Tollefson(17th)  http://www.footlockercc.com/history/1994girls.htm

2011–Reminiscent of a heavyweight boxing match, junior Edward Cheserek and senior Futsum  Zeinasellassie traded surges, not punches, for the last 2-miles of the boys race at the Foot Locker Championships in San Diego. Cheserek held a very slight lead as they entered the final 1/4-mile, often looking over his shoulder at his persistent challenger before pulling ahead for the win in the last 100-meters (14:52:14:53). Cheserek had finished 2nd to Lukas Verzbicas in 2010 and just won his 2nd FL title this past weekend.
The two natives of Africa became friends after Cheserek(Kenya)  sought out Zeinasellassie(Eritrea), whom he had been following on the internet during the season, shortly after the runners arrived at the luxurious Hotel Del  Coronadao .(See link below)
Senior Molly Seidel (17:22) edged  junior Erin Finn(17:24) to win the girls race.
