The Commonwealth Games, the third global championships of the year, began for track & field today in Birmingham, England. 6,500 athletes from 72 countries will be competing, all former colonies of Great Britain. One of the athletes competing in the Birmingham 2022 CG is Jake Wightman, who just won the World Champs 1,500 meters!
I went to the ‘Friendly Games’ in 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland, and loved the experience. Speaking with so many athletes who were competing for England, Wales, Scotland and Kenya was a lot of fun. I remember Usain Bolt trying Haggis, a Scottish cult food, and not appreciating it.
The appreciation of the crowds at the Commonwealth Games for the athletes was one of my big remembrances. This CG is in Birmingham, England, the city with more canals than Venice, Italy! I have spent some time in Birmingham, and I am missing my friends there. I have been to 72 countries in my life, and hope you get to travel. I have found good people in every country, and stories that stay with me on each and every walk! Make some memories of your time on this planet.
I began running in September 1972, and my first race was on my birthday, September 11, 1972. I ran two miles in 18:19 and finished dead last. It took me seven more years before I won a race (in college), but I must tell you, my best friends are from my days on cross country and track at Bellarmine, DeSmet, and Santa Clara.
