This is Witness the Wonder, the Preview to the 2023 World Champs in Budapest for Day 22, May 9, 2023.  Six Stories on Hungarian Athletes and their Dreams about Budapest 2023!

For the next 23 days, RunBlogRun will be posting a story a day on the buildup to the World Athletics Outdoor Championships, to be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-August 27, 2023.

Hungarian Athletics has a long history in our sport. Great Hungarians have competed in all of the major disciplines, and in 2023, in Budapest, it will be no different. We have spoken about some of the historical stars and the desire by Pars and Marton, but I also wanted to fill you in on some of the up-and-comers in Hungarian track & field.

Here are six stories on Hungarian Athletes and their dreams for their hometown World Championships!

  1. Watch for Bence Halász, one of the top Hungarian hammer throwers with a PB of 80.92m. Bence has won the European Athletics silver medal in Munich in 2023 and bronze from Berlin in 2018 at the European championships. In Doha in 2019, Bence took the WC silver; he should be a player in the World Champs hammer throw final.
  2. Watch for Anita Marton, World Indoor Champion, in 2016 and 2018; in London in 2017, Anita took the bronze. Anita Marton, now 40, wants to medal in her final championships in front of the home crowd. Watch Anita Marton in the shot put!
  3. Watch for the Hungarian Women’s team in the 4×400-meter relay! Bianka Bartha-Kéri, Evelin Nádházy, Fanni Rapai, and Janka Molnár have a very good shot at taking down the National record in the 4×400-meter relay!
  4. Watch the Women’s hammer in the great tradition of Hungarian athletics; Réka Gyurátz should be seen in the Women’s hammer throw. Five of Hungary’s ten Olympic gold medals have been won in the hammer throw.
  5. Do not forget about the Men’s 4×400-meter relay team! Watch for Attila Molnár, Dániel Huller,  and Zoltán Wahl. Also watch for Attila Molnár in the Men’s 400 meters, Tamás Máté in the Men’s 200 meters, and Dániel Huller in the Men’s 800 meters!
  6. In the multi-events, Xénia Krizsán could be a big surprise. In Torun, in 2021, at the European Indoors, Xénia Krizsán took third in the pentathlon and also broke the Hungarian record. In the recent European Outdoors, Munich 2022, Xénia Krizsán took fifth in the heptathlon.
