BRUSSELS (BEL, Sep 4): New Diamond League records by Chase Jackson in the shot put (21.14 world lead) and Collen Kebinatshipi in the 400m (43.40) highlighted the first day of the 50th Allianz Memorial Van Damme and DL Final. Faith Cherotich (8:51.61), Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1:41.80), Emmanouil Karalis (612) and Kristjan Čeh (71.29) also set four more meeting records. Crowds celebrated four-time Diamond League 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and also ten first-time champions, but could not watch Mondo Duplantis due to back problems. Some 30 000+ watched the meet.
Short event-by-event reviews
Women
200m: Julien Alfred ran an excellent last 50 meters to win in 21.79 (0.1) ahead of Kayla Whyte (22.00), with quadruple European champion Amy Hunt third in a season’s best of 22.16.
5000m: Freweyni Hailu produced a 59.68 last lap to win in 14:35.20 and lead an Ethiopian 1-2-3 ahead of Likina Amebaw (14:36.31) and Senayet Getachew (14:37.09).
3000m steeplechase: Faith Cherotich kicked to a meeting record of 8:51.61, just outside the world lead of 8:51.06. Doris Lemngole smashed her PB with 8:52.86, with Olympic champion Winfred Yavi fading to third in 8:53.54. For just the second time ever, five athletes broke the 9:00-barrier in the same race.
400m hurdles: After victory in Zurich, Anna Cockrell wins again in 53.01 ahead of European champion Emma Zapletalova in 53.10. Another Belgian record for Paulien Couckuyt with 53.20 in third.
Triple jump: Senegal’s Saly Sarr produced the two longest jumps of the competition with 14.95m (0.2) and 14.96m (0.3) for victory over Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez with 14.82m (0.6).
Shot put: Another massive throw from Chase Jackson. After throwing 21.02m in Berlin, Jackson improved her American record to a world lead of 21.14m, also breaking the Diamond League record; it is the world’s best mark since 2011. Sarah Mitton threw 20.64m in the first round for second, with Jessica Schilder third with 20.57m.
Discus: 2022 world champion Feng Bin took a surprise win over Valarie Sion, 67.46m to 66.92m.
Men
100m: World champion Oblique Seville wins in 9.90 (0.1) with the top four all breaking the 10 second-barrier.
400m: Top four under 44 seconds! Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi improved his Diamond League and national record to 43.40 (but not a world lead) for victory. Trinidad & Tobago’s Jereem Richards improved his national record to 43.68, with Americans Jacory Patterson (43.78) and Chris Bailey (43.97) also setting PBs in third and fourth, respectively.
800m: Meeting record of 1:41.80 for Emmanuel Wanyonyi for a commanding victory over Djamel Sedjati in 1:42.71. France’s Yanis Meziane was third in a big PB and European lead of 1:42.87 with Marco Arop fading to fourth in 1:43.50.
1500m: Cameron Myers found space on the inside to win in 3:30.14 ahead of Kenya’s Phanuel Koech (3:30.18, should earn Budapest spot) and United States’ Ethan Strand (3:30.50). Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who led into the home straight, was fourth in a season’s best of 3:30.52 with Olympic champion Cole Hocker seventh, equalling his season’s best with 3:30.80.
110m hurdles: World record-holder Ja’Kobe Tharp won in 13.03 (-0.2), leading a US 1-2-3 from Jamal Britt (13.09) and Trey Cunningham (13.22). Cordell Tinch fell at the last barrier.
High jump: Mateusz Kolodziejski cleared 2.28m for victory (confirmed his Budapest spot) on countback ahead of world leader Ju’Vaughn Harrison. Gianmarco Tamberi was third at 2.25m but had one very close attempt at 2.31m.
Pole vault: With Armand Duplantis a late withdrawal due to a back problem, Emmanouil Karalis cleared 6.12m to break Mondo’s MR by one centimeter. He won by 30 centimeters from Norway’s Sondre Guttormsen and Australia’s Kurtis Marschall, who were second and third on countback.
Long jump: Tajay Gayle bounded out to a season’s best of 8.46m (1.4) in the last round to displace Miltiadis Tentoglou, who had led with 8.40m (0.5).
Discus: European champion Kristjan Ceh defeated world record-holder Mykolas Alekna. Both athletes surpassed the previous meeting record with 71.29m and 70.14m respectively.
