Dwain Chambers runs 6.50, fastest time in the world, at AVIVA UK Trials, after running 6.58 in rounds. Terrance Trammell continues to hurdle well, with his fine 7.43 for the 60m hurdles in Leipzig. Malte Mohr cleared 5.83m in pv there as well for a meeting record. Sergio Sanchez broke ER of Alberto Garcia from 2003 (Sevilla, 7:32.98), with his run in Valencia (2008 home of WIC). With splits of 2.31.62, 5:06.73, Sanchez ran 2.25.68 for his final kilo! Remember, this guy ran 4:54 for 2k
as his first European best of 2010.
Just breaking, Shalane Flanagan and Molly Huddle were 1,2 at the USA XC in Spokane. Shalane took off about 1k, and did not look back! Dathan Ritzenhein caught Patrick Smythe mid race and took over, not challenged on the back of the course!


SANCHEZ EUROPEAN INDOOR RECORD AT 3000 M
VALENCIA (ESP): Spanish runner Sergio Sanchez is in shape of his life. At Valencia IAAF Indoor Permit meet after perfect race he improved European indoor record at 3000 m with 7:32.41. He started with 2:31.62, had 5:06.73 2k split and final k in 2:25.68. It is the first European record of the year in championships event, no world record was broken yet. Previous record 7:32.98 by another Spanish runner Alberto Garcia was achieved in 2003 in Sevilla. Sanchez clocked earlier in the season European 2000 m indoor best. Second Beijing steeple winner Brimin Kipruto of Kenya clocked 7:42.99. Another top race of the evening was the 1500 m with Kenyan William Biwott improving to 3:35.86 over Gideon Gathimba 3:36.54. French steeple olympic medalist Mahiedine Mekhisi-Benabaad clocked impressive 3:37.52 indoor PB as fourth. Olympic winner from Athens Yuriy Borzakovskiy won in meet record 1:46.54 the 800 m (here olympic champion Asbel Kiprop of Kenya sixth 1:47.45). Dayron Robles training partner Dayron Capetillo of Cuba scored his first win in Europe with 7.69 at 60 m hurdles. Churandy Martina beat in the 60 m final Italian Simone Collio as both clocked 6.62. Impressive also the long jump with Luis Meliz leaping to second best this season 807 ahead of Cuban Wilfredo Martinez (803) and young Eusebio Caceres who improved Spanish junior indoor record to 802. Veteran Ivan Pedroso (37) jumped 735 as sixth. German Carolin Hingst won the pole vault with 451 (her starting height) on count-back over Czech Jirina Ptacnikova (451). Polish 2004 Olympic winner Tomasz Majewski (19.93m) won over American Dan Taylor (19.71) in shot put. Ruth Beitia also on count-back beat US Chaunte Howard in high jump (both 194). Moroccan favorite Hasna Benhassi managed 2:01.87 to win the 800 m and Poland´s Sylwia Ejdys was the best in the 1500 m in 4:07.17.
TWO WORLD LEADS: MOHR 583 AND TRAMMELL 7.43
LEIPZIG (GER): A record 3113 people showed up at the Erdgas indoor meeting in Leipzig. They witnessed two world leading performances, a first time when German Malte Mohr jumped to a new meeting record of 5.83m in the pole vault and a second time when Terrence Trammell ran the 60m hurdles in 7.43, which was also a meeting record (in total six were broken). Second Petr Svoboda of Czech Republic confirmed his current shape with 7.54. A new meeting record as well was set by Moroccan Abdelaati Iguider in the 1500m, his time of 3:34.68 put him one place before Kenyan Chepseba Nixon who ran a lifetime best of 3:35.82. The fourth meeting record was achieved by US Christian Cantwell who achieved in the shot put 21.61, home Ralf Bartels placed third with 20.66 (second Dylan Armstrong of Canada 20.85 NR). A fifth meeting record was for Russian world leading long jumper Darya Klishina (still a junior) who jumped 674, Sosthene Moguenara of Germany leaped to a new PB of 6.69m. In the 60m Lerone Clarke performed meeting record number six with a 6.55 run, Mark Jelks was second with 6.58 while Ivet Lalova of Bulgaria won the women‘s race in 7.24. In the women‘s hurdles race Jamaican Lacena Golding-Clarke managed 7.98, Carolin Nytra ran 7.99, her first sub 8. German Julian Reus ran a European leading time in the 200m with a time of 20.95. Qatari Ogunodu Femi won the 400m in 47.15. Ukrainian world indoor medalist Tetyana Petlyuk ran 2:02.01 in the 800 m.
CHAMBERS IS FAST: 6.50
SHEFFIELD (GBR, Feb 13): The first day of the UKA Aviva World trials in Sheffield brought a few interesting duels. Dwain Chambers dominated men´s 60m dash, as he clocked in semi-finals 6.58s to win the first heat and even improving in the final to world leading 6.50, showing his back to Harry Aikines Aryeetey in 6.55s, a new PB, and third Craig Pickering with 6.66s. It is third successive UK title for Chambers. „It‘s nice but it‘s still early days, I‘m sure the Americans are going to come out and do something crazy,“ said Chambers. „It‘s nice to know I have made the team and can hopefully focus my attention towards Doha now. I‘ve made my fair share of mistakes, I just want to put that behind me now and concentrate on what‘s right for the sport. Me running fast is the best thing I can do. There‘s lots of things I wish I‘d done correctly but it‘s done now and I just want to do the best I can while I‘m in the sport. Running fast is what I enjoy doing and it spurs these guys on as well,“ he was quoted, writes David Martin. Trecia Smith from Jamaica won the women´s triple jump with 13.69m. Victory in women´s high jump went to Vicki Hubbard for 187. Kate Dennison was the strongest woman in pole vault winning with jump over 440m in her second attempt. Callum Priestley clocked 7.69 to beat the others in men´s 60m hurdles. Joice Maduaka was the fastest at 60m among women achieving 7.29s. In the men´s long jump, nobody broke 8 meters. Greg Rutherford was the closest one jumping into 794. Far behind him, second Christopher Tomlinson achieved 775. The final of 3000 m brought five PBs. Hazel Murphy from Ireland was the fastest woman winning in new PB 9:02.06, ahead of Gemma Turtle in 9:02.81.The new PB of 8:00.70 brought the gold medal to Andy Vernon beating the field at men´s 3000m. The Aviva World trials continues tomorrow with 14 finals.
PAHAPILL BEATS CUBANS
TALLINN (EST, Feb 13): European indoor champion Mikk Pahapill scored 6156 points to win the Estonian Indoor heptathlon title. He was leading after first day and during Saturday achieved 8.06 at the hurdles, 505 in pole vault and 2:48.38 in the 1000 m. Cuban world medalist Leonel Suarez improved his own national record by 5 points with 5964 (8.15, 485 and 2:36.12 during second day). Third Andres Raja collected 5908 points and fourth another Cuban Yunior Diaz 5779 points. That opens some chances for Pahapill to qualify based on 2010 results to Doha. In the current ranking he is third behind Drozdov and Kasyanov assuming that Ashton Eaton of USA will compete at NCAA Championships which are on the same weekend as World Indoors. World junior 2008 medalist Grit Sadeiko collected 4166 to win women pentathlon and that is her PB.
OTHER RESULTS
AUBIERE (FRA, Feb 13): European fastest 100 m junior ever French Christophe Lemaitre continues with improvements. At national U23 championships he bettered the national record of that category to 6.55. He clocked 6.69 in heats and 6.64 in semis. Benoit Maxwell improved in long jump to 791 cm. POTSDAM (GER, Feb 13): Ukrainian Maksim Mazuryk won the men competition at the International pole vault meet in shopping center Stern. He cleared 570 ahead of Russian Viktor Chistyakov and Czech Michal Balner as both went over 560. Interesting the 17-years old German Carlo Paech who improved to 540 (was 12th).
SOFIA (BUL, Feb 13): Spas Bukhalov won his fourth Bulgarian national title in pole vault with 540. During first day of national championships Viktor Ninov improved in high jump to 225 cm.
BUDAPEST (HUN, Feb 13): Nearly 220 athletes from 10 countries competed at International meet of Hungarian Athletics Federation (MASZ). The best result was new Hungarian record for hurdler Daniel Kiss who clocked 7.56 at 60 m hurdles and improved his mark from Karlsruhe by 0.01. Bulgarian Vanya Stambolova posted fast 52.01 at 400 m. Anita Marton registered Hungarian U23 indoor record in shot put 17.47 m (her overall best). International wins for Slovenian Matic Osovnikar at 60 m (6.84), Lithuanian Vitaliy Kozlov at 800 m (1:48.98) and Slovak Peter Horak in high jump (222). Solid also the 8.21 by Slovenian Marina Tomic at 60 m hurdles.
SPALA (POL, Feb 13): Sprinter Marika Popowicz clocked 7.38 and 23.71 at an open meet. Przemyslaw Czerwinski cleared 550 in pole vault and combined eventer Karolina Tyminska improved her 60 m hurdles best to 8.34 (before 8.50).
POMBAL (POR, Feb 13): Vera Santos who was fifth at Berlin World Championships achieved during first day of Portugal Clubs Championships at 3000 m walk world leading 12:32.11. Naide Gomes leaped to 662 in long jump, Lithuanian European U23 champion Lina Grincikaite got 7.34 win at 60 m and Ana Dulce Felix who has heavy terrain schedule behind her won the 1500 m in 4:14.96.
ANCONA (ITA, Feb 13): New Italian indoor U23 record for Daniele Greco with 16.95 in triple jump during the national championships of that category. MOGILYOV (BLR, Feb 13): Natalya Koreyvo won also the 800 m after 1500 m during second day of Belarus Indoor Championships with 2:04.89. Volha Kravtsova was the best in 3000 m (9:16.09) and Olga Ostashko clocked 23.95 at 200 m. Brest region team clocked 3:39.42 in women 4×400 m. CELJE (SLO, Feb 13): Snezana Rodic achieved Doha standard in triple jump here with 14.07 m.
PEANIA (GRE, Feb 13): Olympian Athanassia Perra started her year at local meet with 13.88 in triple jump. Cyprean record holder Marianna Zahariadi cleared 435 cm in pole vault.
PRAHA (CZE, Feb 13): Jana Koresova won the Czech pentathlon title with 4269 score. Javelin world record holder Barbora Spotakova achieved 8.96 at 60 m hurdles, 172 in high jump and life-time best 14.51 in shot put. She did not continue in last two events of pentathlon being provisionally second. „My intention was to compete only in this three events and I m satisfied with testing my shape, I did not compete in some of this events for many years,“ said the olympic champion who started originally as heptathlete.
SEATTLE (USA, Feb 12): The Oregon Track Club Elite team of Nick Symmonds, Matt Scherer, Tyler Moulder and Will Leer ran the fastest distance medley relay on an indoor track 9:21.77 during first day of Husky Classic at oversized track in Seattle. The record of 9:25.77 by Texas was achieved on a 200-meter track in Fayetteville in 2008.
OTHER NEWS
NAIROBI (KEN): The Nation informs that Florence Kiplagat, the world cross-country reigning champion will not run at next weekend‘s Athletics Kenya national cross-county trials. Kiplagat, who ended Kenya‘s long gold drought in the senior women‘s race by winning in Amman, Jordan, last year, has not been training since the end of last year as she is still recovering from a hamstring injury she picked up at the Berlin World Championships while running in the 10,000 meters last year.
