This is our 38th day of previews of the 2023 World Outdoor Athletics Championships, in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-27, 2023. I found my hotel today, which costs 1/3 of the price that we were charged in Eugene, Oregon, last year! Great airfares to Budapest (Lufthansa, Swiss Air, TAP, and Air Baltic are all good). The Good, the bad, and the unusual in Budapest

Today I am writing about five US athletes who should be on the podium in Budapest!

Ryan Crouser. Men’s Shot Put. Ryan is the world record holder, indoor and out in the Men’s shot put. I just watched Ryan throw 22.38m in pouring rain last month at the Drake Relays. I am watching Ryan Throw on Saturday, May 27, in LA. Here’s one thing we know: Ryan will be ready to defend in Budapest.

Athing Mu. Women’s 800 meters. Athing is at the top of her game. Her 800-meter golds in Tokyo and Eugene showed her prowess. Athing has the drive to break the World record in the Women’s 800 meters. Now, Athing is looking at the 1,500m for another challenge. That will be interesting as she has some worthy competition.

Katie Moon. Women’s Pole Vault. The Olympic and World Champion has had a couple of incredible years, but she is also a very tough competitor. I do not think that this will change in Budapest; in fact, I believe we could see gold and silver for the US in the women’s pole vault in August.

Chase Ealey. Women’s shot put. Chase has won the gold medal in the shot put in Eugene. Throwing well in 2023, Ealey will take on Gong Liljao of China in Budapest. That competition should be inspiring, as both throwers really want the top of the podium.

Noah Lyes. Men’s 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100m relay. Noah wants to defend his 200-meter title but also wants to win the 100 meters. Noah has huge ambitions, and he is capable of taking both races. A hugely popular athlete, Noah and his brother Josephus want to do good things with their foundation, which I admire. Watch Noah in Budapest.
