This is our 40th day of previews of the 2023 World Outdoor Athletics Championships, in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-27, 2023. The Good, the bad, and the unusual in Budapest

Here are five surprises I think you may see in Budapest!

There are always surprises at World Championships. Due to the pandemic, four years of championships in a row, how many athletes will make it through the 4 years. An elite athlete’s emotional, physical, and spiritual challenges must not be underestimated. Four years of championships in a row takes a big toll, and this is only year 2 of 4.
The sprint wars are on. The 100 meters and 200 meters are the most surprising of many ways. The life spans of elite sprinters is pretty short, and one muscle cramp and the athlete’s chances are over. To win a World Championship medal in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters requires the perfect storm of fitness, racing, and focus.

The Champs are about competitions. The events are about how people can run, jump and throw. Our sport over-emphasizes the fast times. In my 14 World Championships, I remember the emotional finishes and gutty surprises that come in the last throw or jump. The shows of emotions capture us all.
New athletes want to make their marks. I love following athletes from the first round to the finals. I pick five to ten athletes that I know nothing about and watch, round through round. Sometimes, one gets an emotional attachment to these fine athletes, knowing that a big race, or an extra centimeter, can make a huge difference.

This will be the last hurrah for some athletes. There are athletes who have competed in five or six World Championships. It is fascinating to me that these athletes have spent most of their adult and not-so-adult lives in the sport. Some will come out of retirement for one last championship. That is very hard to do, and I admire athletes for putting their lives on hold.
