Ellie Shea and Drew Griffith Capture First Place Titles in the 43rd Annual Champs Sports Cross Country Championships Northeast Regional

RACE HIGHLIGHTS:

Ellie Shea of Belmont, Mass., and Drew Griffith of Butler, Pa., won the Champs Sports Cross Country (formerly Foot Locker CC) Championships Northeast Regional today. Shea, a junior at Belmont High School, claimed the title in the girls’ championship race in 17:10.7. Karrie Baloga, a senior from New Windsor, N.Y., finished the second in17:24.9, and Zariel Macchia, a sophomore from Shirley, N.Y. placed third in 17:47.9. The top-three finishers in today’s race are all repeat girls’ national finalists from the Northeast Region with Shea and Macchia having advanced last year and three-time national finalist Baloga having done so in 2019 as a freshman as well. (Note: The ninth-place finisher in today’s race, Rose Coats of Brooklyn, N.Y., qualified but declined the invitation to the national finals, thus allowing 11th-place finisher Olivia Murray to advance to San Diego, California, for the finals.)

Griffith, a junior at Butler Senior High School, took the title in the boys’ championship race in 15:20.9. Sam Burgess, a senior from Framingham, Mass., finished second in today’s race in 15:21.3 and Paul Bergeron, a junior from Stratham, N.H., finished third in 15:30.8. With his runner-up finish, Burgess is now a two-time national qualifier.
