This was the opening conference of the World Outdoor Athletics Championships, held on August 18, 2023 at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary. The presser featured Seb Coe, President of World Athletics, Balazs Nemeth – CEO of the LOC of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, Ádám Schmidt, State Secretary for Sport and Government Commissioner for the World Athletics Championships. Questions ranged from how Global Warming affects the sport, Cross Country, and how it should be part of WA or Olympics, how to manage longer events when heat can affect events, and Whether another World Champs can come to the US.
The presser was well attended, and Seb Coe is always eminently quotable. My big take: Seb Coe is open to World Champs in the US again, but he would like to see it on the Eastern Seaboard, as that would be great for global television.
